Joe Con 2012: Collector’s Club announces Figure Subscription Service, Round 2

Not much in the way of news out of the Collector’s Club Roundtable held yesterday afternoon save for one key piece: a SECOND Figure Subscription Service has been announced.  Only four figures so far have been revealed but those are:

  • Dragonsky (necessary to complete your Yearbook #2 team)
  • Iceberg
  • Night Force Falcon
  • Big Bear (another Oktober Guard!)

Still no word as to when the FIRST round of Figure Subscription Service will launch as the club is still working “bugs out of the system.”

My only comments are: So THAT’S where Dragonsky’s gone to!

JoeCon 2012: Images trickling in from across the web

The official registration hasn’t opened yet but last night Golden Ticket holders were able to pick up their con sets and receive the attendee bonus exclusive item– the Russian repainted Snarler cycle with side car.

A quick check of the web revealed that the crew over at HISS Tank have rushed to get some nice light-boxed in-hand images uploaded.  I’ve mirrored a few of them below but you can check out the entire gallery over at HISSTank.com.  There’s also the images from Madmac41 and Photonut from last night.

All-in-all it’s a pretty solid set!  While I’m not overly crazy about the long-coated Iron Grenadiers I’m positively giddy over the Oktober Guard figures.  (Okay, even Iron Bear who still looks like he’s 12.  What?  Comrade Doogie Hauser is now in Russian high command?!!)

It looks like Operation: Bear Trap is going to go down in the books as “one of the good ones.”

FPComics.com debuts– the comics arm of the Fun Publications

With the 2012 Joe Convention getting underway in New Orleans, you might expect that most of the Joe-related news right now is going to be centered around “Darklon is an exclusive!” or “Ice Cream Soldier is the parachute figure!!”  Well, imagine my surprised when Ben Yee of BWTF.com posted a link to a new website…

Currently more of a static image than a fully functioning website (although I suspect this is just a ‘preview’), FP Comics seems to be the publishing arm of Master Collector/Fun Publications.  It’s also a site where fans can order previous convention comics for both G.I. Joe and Transformers as well as a series called “Lydia vs. Zombies”.  (No idea what it’s about as the individual title links aren’t working right now.)  The current main pages indicates that comics will be available in the July edition of Previews from Diamond Comics Distributors.

It’s certainly an interesting move for the folks down at Cattle Baron Drive and one that could pay off for them in the future in a ‘print on demand’ kind of way.  With IDW Publishing regular Joe and TF titles I don’t know how much intial appeal this will have but if FP Comics starts to offer trade paperback versions of the monthly Joe news letter comics I know one particular site admin who will be placing an immediate pre-order.  (Seriously– the AT comic is surprisingly good!)

Joe Con 2012: The exclusives revealed– sort of…

Madmac41 is down on the scene at the 2012 Joe Con in New Orleans and has sent on this information regarding the 2012 Convention Exclusives.  (Thanks to his Golden Ticket.)

  • Annihilator 3-Pack (LE 650)
  • IG Ground Assault 2-Pack (LE 1,000)
  • Cobra Stealth Paratrooper (LE 500)
  • OG Attack Helicopter (LE 600)
  • Soviet Convoy Truck w/ 3 Tops (LE 500)

EDIT– I received a pair of pics last night from Photonut showing Horrorshow and the sidecar of the Joe Con Snarler.  It looks like Stepan needs to lay off the borscht if he’s going to be riding shotgun any time soon!  Still, an updated Oktober Guard is something that has been top of many Joe fan’s “wish list” for some time now so it looks like the Club has another hit on their hands!

SDCC 2012: In hand pics of red Jinx

SDCC exclusives can be a tricky thing.   Figures like the 25th “Pimp Daddy Destro” were easy to get if you wanted the silver version but the variant gold head proved far more elusive.  Sgt. Slaughter was HIGHLY sought after and yet the Convention Cobra Commander is still relatively easy to find.  (Let’s not mention Zarana– she’s a sore spot for some collectors… especially after the BigBadToyStore.com Dreadnok 7 pack made her an essential piece to complete any Dreadnok collection.)

At Toy Fair 2012, Hasbro unveiled their SDCC exclusives which included two versions of Kim Arashikage– better known to fans as “Jinx”.  Over at JoeDeclassified.com, Gyre-Viper has gotten his hands on an early sample and has posted a gallery of images of the red version.  I’ve mirrored a few below but I’d suggest checking out the thread over at JoeDeclassified for more.

Overall she looks pretty solid!  It’s an interesting mix of new and existing Storm Shadow parts.  While I don’t know about the white version yet, I’ll most likely be tracking down this red version come late summer.

Podcast: What’s on Joe Mind episode #54

The guys at What’s On Joe Mind have been going at it for over a year now!  Covering a full slate of topics from figures to voice actor interviews to convention news, this is the longest running Joe podcast on the web.  (Even if they never post their updates here!)

Check out the synopsis of episode #54, including a surprise bit by a hack website admin.

This week we step back into the shadowy depths of the fandom to find the person responsible for the very cool, but very outlawed fan made video game, GI Joe: The Attack on Cobra Island.  A crack team of WOJM investigative reporters, seasoned by watching 20/20 tracked down the lead designer of the game, known to us as Lord Skiff (aka Range Viper).  Skiff, or Skiffer as Mike likes to call him, agreed to a clandestine interview.  TO protect his privacy, Skiff asked that we disguise his voice.  He’s an every day collector and fan just like you and me.  Find out what he has to say about his game, the C&D issued by Hasbro’s lawyers and its foggy future.  Rounding out the first half of the program, our buddy and admin of JoeBattlelines.com, Fred Meyer (aka Leo T. Dragon) gives an indepth review and historical lession of the 2002 JoeCon Crimson Strike Team set.  Following halftime we were joined by Michael (aka Counterpunch) co-host of the Seibertron.com Twincast Podcast to discuss the atmosphere at BotCon and some of the differences and similarities of the opposing fandoms.  You’d be surprised at what we discover.  After our good byes with Counterpunch, we dip into the mailbag for some JoeCon related questions.  In the news, Chuck GUSHES about the new YoJoe.com layout.  The rest of us admit, it is AWESOME!  THe GIJCC unveils Stormavik and the first figure of the opposing faction – you get our reactions. All this and a ton more, PLUS we debut our new ORIGINAL theme music by composer Mat Howlett!!  The countdown to JoeCon 2012 continues!  Join the fun, won’t you?

Joecon 2012: Voltar revealed!

Wow– didn’t see this one coming at all.  Destro’s General was only ever given ONE figure in the classic ARAH era and that was back in 1988!  This version works– in a way that the IG’s weren’t for me.  Featuring a good mix of existing and new tooling this is pretty darned fantastic update to a fairly obscure ARAH-era character.  (Who’d have thought the Accelerator Suits would see some new use?)  Seriously– from the colors to the parts chosen, this is about the best possible parts combo for the character outside of a 100% newly tooled figure.

It just makes you wonder if someone is going to start producing 1:18 vultures to go with him.

Joecon 2012: Brekhov revealed!

Even with Botcon in full swing, the Collector’s Club manages to drop a surprise on Joe fans today.

Feast your eyes on Colonel Ivan Nikolevich Brekhov, commander of the Oktober Guard and hero of the USSR!  The good colonel has been without a new figure since G.I. Joe comic pack #6 and the club seems to rely heavily on the Rise of Cobra Destro figure to bring him to life.  Of all of the figures shown thus far, this one seems to be the most “off model” and yet still manages to capture the essence of the plucky Soviet soldier.  I don’t think I can recall ever seeing the good Colonel with his collar fastened and the tie is at odds with his often “rumpled” appearance.  Brekhov always struck me as a soldier who cared more about results than a spit-and-polish appearance.  Still, it’s good to see him released in updated plastic form.

With three down in terms of reveals, can Stormavik and Horrorshow be far behind?  Will Dragonsky make an appearance?

JoeCon 2012: Schrage revealed!

The G.I. Joe Collector’s Club continues their 2012 1:18 convention set reveals with Schrage!

The Oktober Guard infantryman from East Germany is looking pretty spiffy in his first 25a-style construction!  He’s even clutching his beloved AK-47 and sports some very detailed web gear with what appears to be a sculpted canteen!  In fact, this figure looks as if he’s stepped right off the pages of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue #6 in which the Soviet team debuted.

Honestly– if this is any indication of how the rest of this set is going to turn out, I’m going to be one happy Joe fan when my non-attending con set arrives in the mail.
