IDW reveals new Cobra Commander in USA Today interview!

IDW’s G.I. Joe comic franchise took a pretty dramatic turn last year when, in Cobra #12, Joe agent Chuckles ended Cobra Commander’s leadership with a rifle slug.  Now,  nearly one chronological year later, the new Commander will be revealed in G.I. Joe vol 2 #8, which hits stands tomorrow.  It even features a “scratch off cover

If you want to be spoiled as to who the new Commander is, check out this interview at USAToday.com.

You’ve been warned… the article pretty much spills the beans.

What isn’t so spoilery is that the new Commander’s look is also revealed and it’s a pretty dramatic change.  In fact, it’s also hauntingly familiar to fans of Sigma 6.

Check out the “Commander’s new robes” below and check out G.I. Joe #8 on shelves tomorrow!  (Until then, there’s a preview on Scribd.com.)

Captain America: First Avenger on DVD today!

No, Captain America hasn’t been rolled into the G.I. Joe brand– but today is the release date for one of the best and most fun super hero movies I’ve seen in a good long while.  Captain America: First Avenger drops into stores today in both DVD and BLU-Ray versions.  If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned comic movie where the hero is an example to all, this is the film for you.

Plus, the figure line is practically in scale with the new Joes!  Who doesn’t want to see Cap leading a group of Steel Brigade troopers through a door to bust some Cobra heads?

Here’s the official press release:

I have mixed feelings about this event.  While it is bound to make for some interesting reading, I feel that it happened almost a bit too quickly.  We had only just began to get a real glimpse of the current IDW Commander- less used-car salesman and pyramid scheme manager and more of a classic James Bond shadow leader– when he was assassinated by Chuckles in the now infamous single panel kill shot.  I’ve enjoyed IDW’s run on G.I. Joe so far when it has strayed into new territory so I’m still along for the ride.  Still… I think this event might have had more impact if readers had been exposed to the now-deceased Commander just a bit more.

I don’t know about most fans out there but I was ecstatic when IDW continued the reprints that Marvel started several years ago.    Hopefully the series will sell well enough that I’ll be able to post that “Volume 15 has been released” in just a few years.   Plus, that new cover kicks all sorts of snake tail!!

‘Special Missions’ set to return! UPDATED and clarified.

UPDATE: Mark added some clarification to this rumor on his Facebook page.  Apparently he mentioned at the Canadian Joe-Con this past weekend that he had submitted a PROPOSAL for a new Special Mission series.  However, IDW has not announced any intention to currently deploy another Joe title in your monthly pull box.  So, before you run to your local comic shop and demand Special Missions, be aware that right now it’s just a proposal, nothing more.

And now you know…

That’s right gang, hot off the presses from the Canadian JoeCon, our pals to the north at JoeCanuck.com have the comic world starting to buzz!!

Mark Bellomo (Ultimate Guide to G.I. Joe) revealed at a Q & A panel that he is tapped to write ‘Special Missions’ for IDW.

Now, excuse me while I go giggle in a corner at the coolness of this news!!

Transformers and G. I. Joe Comics come to the iPad™

IDW Publishing and Hasbro bring

Transformers and G. I. Joe Comics to the iPad™

“Storefront” applications debut as top downloads on iPad™

Free apps include three free comics each

San Diego, CA (May 17, 2010) – IDW Publishing and Hasbro are proud to announce that TRANSFORMERS Comics and G.I. JOE Comics applications are available now on the Apple iPad. Taking full advantage of the iPad’s full-screen, full-color capabilities, the apps will offer the next level of reading experience to fans. The free IDW iPad storefront apps each include three free comics with the initial download, and offer more comics as in-app purchases. Fans can browse nearly 200 comics for their favorite story lines, such as movie tie-ins, ongoing series or even classics from the 80s.

“The iPad is a wonderful format for comics, as the screen size is close enough to the print size that readers can view the full page. OPTIMUS PRIME and the BARONESS look amazing in this format!” said IDW Director of ePublishing, Jeff Webber. “Our iPad apps are also compatible with our iPhone® and iPod touch® apps. So you can purchase TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE on one device, and read it on another. The apps will automatically identify which one you are using, and adjust to offer the best reading experience.”

Each storefront app offers readers the highest quality viewing experience, with a full-page display that showcases the eye-catching art and vivid stories. IDW has developed several new features to enhance the comics and take full advantage of the iPad’s capabilities, including pinch-zoom abilities and single- or two-page viewing options.

“Both G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS stories have such a broad appeal and have been gaining steam with the core readership, that pushing them to the front of the iPad store just made sense,” says Andy Schmidt, IDW Senior Editor on both franchises. “These are not just great apps and a great reading experience, these are great stories with beautiful artwork.”
