AMCTV.com: “The Secret Influence of Comic Books”

An article by Nick Nadel at AMCTV.com has this to say about this summer’s release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra:

G.I. Joe: Revenge of Cobra

If there is anything even remotely cool or interesting about Stephen “The Mummy” Sommers’ take on the “Real American Hero,” you can thank longtime G.I. Joe comic book scribe Larry Hama. Through his work on the comic (which at one time outsold The Uncanny X-Men) and on the filecards that came with the action figures, Hama established the many character traits and story points that fans know and love: Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes being part of the same mysterious ninja clan? Drawn from Hama’s own background in martial arts and Japanese history. Cobra Commander’s transformation from an average guy to a maniacal extremist? That’s Hama too. Snake Eyes and Scarlett’s romance? A Hama creation that was more complex than the cartoon’s simplistic Duke/Scarlett flirtation. The fact that Sommers brought Hama in as an on-set consultant speaks to the writer’s influence on the franchise. Though even he couldn’t stop the filmmaker from bringing in those silly accelerator suits.

Shout! unveils details of ‘complete animated series’ set!

From TVShowsonDVD.com:

By now fans of the classic ’80s animated series have been psyched up for Shout! Factory’s upcoming G.I. Joe – A Real American Hero Complete Collector’s Set, which we know has lovingly restored episodes and is coming in a special “footlocker” package. Plus it will be full of new bonus material, both on DVD (lots of it!) and off (example: bonus temporary tattoos). While we’re still waiting for the “under construction” GIJoeCollectorsSet.com website to go live, fans will be happy to know that the companion site, TransformersCollectorsSet.com has gone live just a short time ago today.

Why would a Joe fan be interested in that? Well, both programs were produced by Sunbow, and with lots of cross-over in the voice cast (for example, “Cobra Commander” and “Starscream” were both voiced by the late, great Chris Latta). But, more to the point, the Transformers site is not only taking pre-orders for The Transformers – 25th Anniversary Matrix of Leadership Edition: Collector’s Set, but from the same site you can also place a pre-order right now for the G.I. Joe – A Real American Hero Complete Collector’s Set as well.

News GraphicThe thumbnail image you see at left is the only graphic shown of the “footlocker” set, and the only information available right now is that it will be a 17-disc collection, costing $145.00 (including standard USA shipping and handling). We asked Shout! Factory for more info, and the studio tells us that they’ll have further details and artwork for us about that release in another week or two, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can lock in your copy right away. Or, if you are attending the San Diego Comic Con (July 23-26), you can get instant gratification by purchasing this title (and/or the big Transformers set) at Shout!’s booth there. We’re told they’ll take cash or credit cards, by the way. Stay tuned for updates!

Transformers beat G.I. Joe in battle for DOD support for summer blockbusters
