Happy Thanksgiving from JoeBattlelines!!!

JBL Thanksgiving

While the observance of the holiday may be an American tradition, the staff of JoeBattlelines.com would like to wish G.I. Joe fans everywhere a safe and happy Thanksgiving!  It’s more than just a day to sit down and fall into a tryptophan-induced coma brought on by the excessive consumption of turkey and starches.  Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things that we have in life to be thankful for.  It’s a day to take stock of the things that each of us might take for granted and to truly appreciate what we have in life.  (Especially if you’re not a turkey!)

So, from all of us here at JBL, Happy Thanksgiving!

Review: Figure Subscription Service Tiger Force Airtight

Figure Subscription Service Tiger Force Airtight

When it comes to new product, G.I. Joe fans are in the middle of a dry spell.  That last Retaliation wave only contained 3 new figures and is proving as elusive as finding a sasquatch in the middle of New York City.  However, last week the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club shipped the first two figures from their second Figure Subscription Service.  Here’s where I spoil the surprise– it was an all Tiger Force shipment!  I was initially pretty luke-warm about these two figures when they were announced however, sometimes having a figure in hand can make all the difference.

So, how does Airtight hold up? Check out the review of Tiger Force Airtight in the Collector’s Club Review Index here at JBL!  Look for Shipwreck to drop by Monday!

Red Cross Links to Help with Central Illinois Tornado Relief

american red cross

Sometimes it takes something larger than ourselves to put things into perspective.

Sunday, November 17 started out a fairly typical Sunday for most.  The weather was forecast to be unseasonably warm– in the mid to upper 60’s– one last final hurrah before temperatures were predicted to plummet into the 40’s on Monday. Central Illinois residents were going about their morning routines– many attending local churches, etc.  At JBL HQ, your friendly neighborhood admin was sitting down at this computer to work on reviews of the Figure Subscription Service 2.0 figures that arrived earlier in the week.  It was a typical, albeit gorgeous, November Sunday morning.

Around 10:30 in the morning the skies were darkening to the northwest of our neighborhood and the wind had started to pick-up, rumbling against the house in a manner I’d not heard before.  I stepped outside to snap a photo of the unusual storm wall moving and realized that the rumbling I’d been hearing wasn’t the wind against the house– it was in the air itself!  Shortly there after, a tornado struck the north end of my hometown and moments later an EF-4 tornado hit the edge of nearby Washington IL.  Within 30 minutes of my stepping outside to snap a photo, 100+ homes in Pekin were damaged and over 400 were destroyed in Washington.  According to our local utility provider, 140,000 people were without power.  (The population of nearby Peoria which wasn’t touched by the twisters is 126,000 to put things in perspective.)  That was almost exactly two days ago.

Since then, thousands are still without power and thousands more are finding themselves with no place to call home.  Curfew has been established in the affected areas and Washington is still under a boil order due to damage to the water towers.

The Red Cross, as always, has stepped in to help.  Setting up emergency shelters, providing water, food, blankets, and helping survivors communicate with their families.  As such, I’m encouraging anyone who finds themselves so inclined to consider donating some spare cash to the American Red Cross to help the families who were affected by Sunday’s unprecedented weather event.  I realize that this time of year everyone has their hand out looking for something and that we live in a time when the cost of EVERYTHING is increasing and that every local body is looking to raise taxes.  However, we’re also just over a week out from Thanksgiving and, for many Central Illinois residents that holiday and the months to come are going to be more difficult than they’ve ever imagined.  So, IF you have the inclination and the means, please considering helping those who were affected by the first EF-4 ever recorded in Illinois in November.

  • You can donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, mailing it to the local chapter or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

I’ll put out this disclaimer: I do not personally benefit from any of this.  My home (aka JBL HQ) was fortunately on the opposite end of town from the disaster that occurred.  We never even lost power– yet I have former co-workers whose homes were either damaged or destroyed, both in Pekin and Washington.  Neither town is what anyone could call a “metropolis” and most likely everyone here will know of SOMEONE who was affected by this.  I’ll be posting a few photos from various sources below as well as links to some local coverage of the disaster.  Central Illinois wasn’t the only area of the US affected by the storms on Sunday but it is the area that, for me, is the most personally affected.

Here is the latest posted update from the American Red Cross on local relief efforts:

The American Red Cross is providing shelter, hope and comfort across five states to help people affected by Sunday’s devastating tornadoes and severe weather.

  • Red Cross volunteers are working around the clock to provide food, shelter and supplies to all those whose lives were affected by these storms.
  • Sunday night, 12 Red Cross shelters were open in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Workers are also providing help to people in Kentucky and Michigan whose homes were affected.
  • As roads reopen, Red Cross emergency vehicles will hand out meals, snacks and relief supplies in affected communities. Emergency aid stations are open in some areas where people can get food and snacks, mental health and health care services, and information about what help is available. Damage assessment teams are also helping to determine the full scope of the destruction left behind by the tornadoes.
  • More workers, supplies and equipment stand are being mobilized in case they are needed.

Red Cross workers on the ground now providing relief and we’ll be on the ground for weeks to come helping people get back on their feet.

  • This has been a deadly and devastating storm, and Red Cross disaster mental health workers are available to help people cope with the aftermath. Health workers are also available to help people replace things like lost medications and eyeglasses.
  • In the days ahead, Red Cross workers will work with families to make individual recovery plans, fill out paperwork, and connect them to other services to support recovery efforts.
  • The Red Cross is coordinating closely with government and community partners to provide help and support long term recovery efforts.

Locally, there are currently 5 shelters open.

  • Crossroads United Methodist Church – 1420 N. Main St in Washington
  • Evangelical United Methodist Church – 401 Main St in Washington
  • First United Methodist Church – 154 E. Washington St in East Peoria
  • Avanti’s Dome – 3105 Griffin Avenue in Pekin
  • Community Health & Rehab Building – 2304 County Road, 3000N in Gifford

Red Cross emergency response vehicles are providing mobile feeding in Washington, Pekin, East Peoria, rural Woodford county and Champaign county. There are fixed feeding sites at Crossroads Church in Washington and Goodfella’s in Pekin.

Item Donations: The Hope Chest in Pekin is accepting items for those affected. More will be added to the list in the coming days.

People affected by severe weather and other disasters need help now. You can help people affected by disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods or other crises by making a gift to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small.

  • You can donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, mailing it to the local chapter or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
  • Your donation helps provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters.

Cross Country Announced as G.I. Joe Collector’s Club Renewal Figure

G.I. Joe Collector's Club Cross Country 2014

It’s that time of year again– when the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club reveals the membership renewal figures for the forthcoming year in an attempt to encourage fans to sign-up/renew their membership.   After a string of successful endeavors over the past few years including Dial-Tone, Footloose, and Iceberg the club pulls out all of the stops with this year’s reveal of HAVOC driver Cross Country!

Based on the debut 1986 version of Cross Country the figure looks pretty darned solid in this fan’s eyes and I’d be remiss if I didn’t sense the involvement of Boss Fight Studios in this design somewhere.  According to the Club:

2014 CROSS-COUNTRY (3 3/4-Inch Modern Era Action Figure)

CROSS-COUNTRY is the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club FREE Membership Incentive Figure for 2014! This FREE figure will be sent to any G.I. Joe Club member that chooses the 3 3/4-inch figure option and whose membership is active by March 16th, 2014.

This club exclusive CROSS-COUNTRY action figure features a NEW head sculpt, NEW vest with holster, figure stand, classic file card and accessories, including: assault rifle, pistol, and NEW vehicle wrench. Members can expect to receive this bagged figure with all his accessories in late spring/early summer of 2014!

It’s a nice recreation/update of the original figure that brings Cross Country firmly into the Generation 3 era of 1:18 construction.  I do miss the character’s goofy grin that was so prevalent on the original 1986 design but I can live without also seeing his “chipmunk cheeks” recreated as well.  (Seriously, it looked he either had the mumps or was storing nuts for the winter in there!)  What is more surprising is that the GIJCC revealed the release of the “HAVOC Mk II” as an optional accessory for purchase later.  Essentially just a repainted Snowcat I’m not certain how it will go over with a membership that has already purchased two Figure Subscription Service waves in the past year.  Consider me definitely down for Cross Country and a probable “pass” on the HAVOC Mk II.

All of the renewal information for both 1:18 and 1:6 can be found at the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club links below.

Sgt. Slaughter to Appear at Retro Con 2014

sgt slaughter

The fan-run convention Retro Con gets better and better with each new announcement. First, the event for 2014 has been extended to two days.  Next Zack Hoffman (the voice of Zartan from the Sunbow animated series) is added to the guest roster.  However, yesterday Retro Con pulled out all the stops– wrestling legend and “real life” G.I. Joe Sgt. Slaughter is now scheduled to appear for both days of the nostalgia event!   You can read the original announcement here.

Autographs or posed photos will be available for $20 with a discount being available for both. So grab your vintage Sgt. Slaughter file cards and make plans to head to Oaks, PA!

Long-known to fans of G.I. Joe from his appearances in the second season of Sunbow’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series, Sgt. Slaughter joined WWE (then WWF) in the early 80’s and quickly achieved celebrity status.  Brandishing his signature move “the Cobra Clutch”, he delighted wrestling fans each week with his hard-nosed drill sergeant persona.  Yet it may be his appearance in the animated G.I. Joe: The Movie that permanently endeared him to Joe fans around the world with his leadership of the Renegades and his “itty bitty ditty bag.”

Retro Con 2014 will run from September 27 – 28 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA.  To keep up with the latest on Retro Con 2014, keep your eyes peeled to JBL and follow them online on Twitter at @Retrocons and at www.RetroCons.com.

Figure Subscription Service 2.0 is Shipping!!!

G.I. Joe Collector's Club Figure Subscription Service 2.0

It may be a long time until new G.I. Joe product is on store shelves but some fans will have a surprise waiting for them in their mailboxes very soon!  The first shipment of the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club Figure Subscription Service has shipped and a few lucky fans already have theirs in hand!

Caution: Spoilers ahead for those who want the shipment to be a surprise.  However, for the remaining 95% of the fandom, the identities will be revealed below.

Master customizer and all-around great guy Alyosha of Broken Arrow Toys posted a few quick shots of his shipment on Facebook over the weekend to reveal that the first shipment is a box of Tiger Force goodness!  That’s right Joe fans, Tiger Force Shipwreck and Airtight should be arriving on subscribers’ doors very very soon.

I have to admit– this shipment is a mixed bag for me.  Let me start off by saying that I’ve NEVER been a big fan of the original Tiger Force color scheme.  Sorry gang, but yellow and black striped shirts seem like they’d blend better at Mardi Gras than in any of the world’s jungles.  As such, I’ve never owned much in the way of Tiger Force ANYTHING save for the Valor vs. Venom Tiger Force Alpine & Crosshairs two-pack and the Toys R Us Exclusive Tiger Force 6 pack.  Not one vintage piece is found anywhere in my collection.  HOWEVER, I have to say that these are growing on me.  Airtight is probably the Joe whose original color scheme is closest to his original release and, well, Shipwreck is Shipwreck.  Thanks to Sunbow I have a soft spot in my Joe fan heart for the character and cut him a lot of slack.  (In some ways he’s Sunbow’s equivalent to Deadpool.)

Expect some reviews of the final product once they drop on my door step in the coming days.  However, so far I don’t hate them like I thought I would.  However, I’m going to go on record and say now that I’d still rather see some more 1:18 Adventure Team in the next FSS than I would more Tiger Force!  (Or Sgt. Savage!!!)
