GIJoe: Retaliation Super Bowl spot is now online!

Yes, it’s only 30 seconds– but it’s 30 seconds of AWESOME!

While it offers very little in terms of story details, it certainly works to increase audience anticipation.  In other words, it’s a solid film commercial!

Feast your eyes on the latest hints of what is to come below:

G.I. Joe Retaliation Super Bowl trailer to debut on iTunes TODAY!!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a mixed bag for most fans.  It was one of those films that had some familiar elements but still seemed to miss the mark in terms of overall feel and story.  The sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation seems to be having the opposite effect as fans and pundits alike can’t seem to stop talking about it in a VERY positive light– and the film hasn’t even hit yet!

Director Jon M. Chu posted a very exciting bit of news on his Twitter feed last night:

One last thing..u will b able to C the #GIJoeRETALIATION#SUPERBOWL commercial in its ENTIRETY TOMORROW on Apple Trailers #30secondsofheaven

That’s right, Joe fan– the super bowl trailer will drop on iTunes some time TODAY!!!   Like most Joe fans, those of us at JBL HQ are going to be keeping our eyes peeled for new footage from what is turning out to be one of the summer’s most anticipated films!

Podcast: What’s on Joe Mind Episode 34 – Retaliation trailer and John Barber

The guys at What’s On Joe Mind have released Episode 34 of their ongoing podcast series.  Here’s the synopsis according to General Hawk:

It’s the G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer episode!  Initially we had planned to do a pretty light weight episode and work in a great interview with IDW’s John Barber, but then the whole G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer launched and that kind of went out the window.

Oh don’t worry, we still spend some good time talking G.I. Joe comics with John Barber, but we also devote some attention to the awesome G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer and manage to talk about some other G.I. Joe stuff as well.  There’s a little of everything here!

The G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer is HERE!!!

I have no words to describe the utter awesomeness contained within this trailer.  Seriously– the bad taste of “Rise of Cobra” has just been washed away… from one trailer alone.

Presented entirely without comment as I’m still digesting it but WOW!

Want to see the G.I. Joe Retaliation trailer released? Here’s one way that might help!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

There’s been a lot of buzz about the pending release of the first trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation — the game-changing sequel to Rise of Cobra.  Regardless of what you may have thought about the first film’s quality, this one certainly boasts a lot more star power including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis!   Longtime friend of JBL Justin from GeneralsJoes.com posted some information that may help to influence Paramount to drop the trailer sooner rather than later.  I’m just going to quote Justin’s post below:

In expressing my enthusiasm to see a trailer for next year’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation film, I had an opportunity to Tweet back and forth with the film’s director Jon Chu, and he recommended that if we want to see the trailer for the film, we should Tweet @ParamountPics and let them know.

So how about it, Joe fans?  Can we get together and let Paramount know that we want to see this thing?

Those of you with Twitter accounts, hit up ParamountPics and let them know!  If you don’t have Twitter, sign up and let’s do this!

Yo Joe!

Seriously guys– Justin’s right on the money.  If Paramount thinks they’ve got an audience, they’ll drop the trailer sooner rather than making us wait for it.  So, follow Justin’s advice and get on Twitter!  Let the power-that-be know that you want to see that Joe trailer– hopefully before year’s end.

While you’re at it– give JBL a follow on Twitter as well at @JoeBattlelines

G.I. Joe: Renegades on hiatus…

Justin over at GeneralsJoes.com has some bad news for fans of the current animated Joe series airing on Hasbro’s HUB network:

G.I. Joe: Renegades

Well, consider the unfortunate news confirmed.  I spoke with Public Relations at The Hub, and they have confirmed that G.I. Joe: Renegades will cease airing original episodes after the summer.  They have declared the series “On Hiatus” in anticipation of the upcoming film sequel.

This sounds remarkably similar to the situation with Transformers: Animated after the third season, as it was phased out in favor for a style closer to the live action Transformers films.  Considering how much stronger fan support Renegades seem to generate, especially when compared to the Rise of Cobra film, this is a disappointing turn of events, to say the least.

Let’s all hope that the next live action film franchise is closer to the spirit of A Real American Hero than the previous film was, so the animation doesn’t potentially suffer for it.  The entire text of the communication from The Hub is below.

You can read the rest of the news, including a quote from Hub’s PR department over at GeneralsJoes.com.

It would seem that the creative direction of the G.I. Joe franchise is once again at the mercy of Paramount Pictures.

(A big thanks to Justin for all of his hard work digging up the facts on this.)

Reviews of the set were mixed upon its release.  Some fans praised it as an innovative play and display environment.  Others compared it to a giant land boat.  Regardless, $20.00 + shipping nets fans an exclusive Dennis Quaid General Hawk figure, a coffee mug, and a card board ping pong table at the bare minimum.  Shipping seems to be estimated at $10.42 by default which means that for $30.40, the Pit could be yours.

“Rise of Cobra” at $133.8M going into the weekend.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

The summer movie season is over and the box office has definitely cooled down.

As of Thursday, September 4, 2009, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has earned $133,821,730 domestically and $131,726,913 internationally.  This means that the first-ever live-action venture for the G.I. Joe team has pulled in $265,548,643 as of yesterday in total.  (Source: BoxOfficeMojo.com)

How does this put the film in the standings for 2009?

Both in the US and international market the film ranks 14th in overall gross for the year, putting it ahead of Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, and the much-hyped Angels & Demons.  It also means that the film is behind such box office hits as Transformers 2, The Hangover (surprise hit of the year), Star Trek, and even Wolverine: Origins.

The film has made money, that’s for certain.  With a hefty production budget of $175M it hasn’t made the same cash that Transformers 2 did– as RoC had half the opening weekend Michael Bay’s overly-loud sequel did.  However, word of mouth for the film has been good – despite the trouncing that it took from film critics who were denied an early preview.

Will we have an officially green-lit and announced sequel by the end of the year?  Time will tell but with the film apparently hitting on DVD December 7, 2009 just in time for the Christmas season it only seems likely that RoC will continue to earn revenue for both Paramount and Hasbro.  (Note: this DVD release date has not yet been officially announced by Paramount for the US market.)

Either way, the film wasn’t the bomb it was predicted to be and has ushered in a whole new era for the G.I. Joe franchise – pulling in new and old fans alike.

And now you know…

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra sequel in the works!

Apparently the forces of the box office can’t keep a good Joe down.

G.I. Joe sequel in the works

Paramount Studios’ vice chairman Rob Moore has told the LA Times that a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is about to go into development.

The cast have all inked deals that require them to appear in the next film, though director Stephen Sommers, who previously was able to launch The Mummy as a franchise, has no such provision in his contract.

No word yet on what the premise of the sequel will be. But as the first movie deals with the rise of Cobra, the organization that stood in opposition to the Joes in both the wildly popular animated show of the 1980s and the related comic book series, there are plenty of possibilities.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra raked in approximately $100 million dollars worldwide over its opening weekend, even though it has yet to open in other key foreign markets, like Germany and Italy.
