“Got to get tough– Yo Joe!  Got to get rough– Yo Joe!!!”

Ah, the DiC era of G.I. Joe.  It was a “special time” in which the line’s only representation in animation saw a drastic reduction in quality.  The stories, the voice acting,  and even the animation were significantly less polished than the previous Sunbow series.  As a result, many fans tend to view the DiC era characters far less favorably than their 1982 – 1987 counterparts.  Of course, the character designs also had nothing to do with it, right?

Released in 1990, Captain Grid-Iron was a Joe that took his love of football a bit too far.  He didn’t just dress the part– he even spoke the part with most of his animation monologues loaded with references to football plays.  Let’s also not forget his signature weapon– the football grenades!

For this build, the Club opted to retool Captain Grid-Iron’s pistol and signature helmet.  Everything else is made from existing parts as is the pattern of the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club.  (Let’s be honest– new tooling costs money so who can blame them?) Overall Grid-Iron looks good albeit a bit slight in terms of build.  Now, I’m not encouraging the Club to reuse the Retaliation Roadblock body once more but it would make sense for something like Captain Grid-Iron.  Also, there’s no mention of a new head so let the speculation begin as to whose head is under that helmet.  (I’m kind of hoping for the 25th Blowtorch head but that’s just me.)

Regardless, it’s nice to see another prominent character from the DiC era added to the old action figure shelf!

  1. Best guess for a parts combo is a new head, POC commando Snake Eyes torso, POC Beachhead arms, Data-Viper upper legs, and Retaliation GI Joe trooper lower legs.
