AT Joes' new ride - updated pics 10/4

Postby Eye of Agamotto » Tue Sep 25, 2007 2:04 pm

Just a couple of pics of my old AT Joes and an Eagle Eye Action Man lurking in the background.

I plan on (someday) painting the Tonka truck into some AT friendly garish color. Probably bright orange or yellow. No, maybe it should be another coolio '70s color: Pea green with and orange shag-carpet in the interior!

The bearded dude is my original Joe from when I was a kiddo. He still talks! :P

Those are really great. The talker looks to be mint.

I used to have that truck! I need to buy that again...that was back when Tonka stuff was still awesome. The stuff I see them put out these days is pretty lame in comparison to the 70's and early 80's stuff they used to make. Those Tonka vehicles could take a SERIOUS beating and have but a scratch to show for it.

Tonka ruled. This truck has seen some serious action over the years and has that typical rust from being scratched and driven through puddles and such. Tonkas used to be able to take what you could give it. Part of the fun was TRYING to mess one up! My younger son has a couple of the newer trucks (dumptruck and bulldozer) and although it is made of mostly metal, it is so thin that it's bent in several places now. :|

Decided to repaint the Tonka truck to make it more AT friendly. Not much of a painter, obviously, but I tried to be careful and not get paint all over where it wasn't supposed to be. I failed in some areas, but I still think this came out okay. I printed out some AT logo for the truck but I didn't know that our color ink was out! SO I grabbed a crayon (Mango Orange) from my son and "fixed" it! Good enough!

Great paint job EA! It's a shame you can't find great vehicles like that anymore. Got any idea how to paint plastic? I have an old 1/6 scale plastic helicopter that really needs to be yellow. I have never had any luck painting plastic.

Fuzzhead, try Krylon Fusion spray paint-it's formulated to "bond" to plastic.Clean your toy with rubbing alcohol, then handle it with rubber gloves to keep skin-oil off.Shake the Krylon REALLY well, then follow the directions for spraying.

DON'T try to get a perfect yellow in one coat! Let it build, coat by coat until you get there. :D

Oh yeah, you can get Krylon at Wal*Mart. :)

i just bought a can of that kryon fusion in midnight green. i bought it for that very reason: bonds to plastic. i used it on 4 of my 5 sand rats that i have used for spare figures. now one of these days i am going to slaps some browns - blacks - light greens for that woodland camo pattern, one of these days.....

The pose of the figure in green is absolutely inspired. You can read so much into it! He looks so confident yet kicked back. Brilliant.
