I'm not really too smart on the post 1990 joe stuff, didn't realize that. But anyhow, all I was saying is that aircraft that ultimately lose out in contract bids often make into some form of media (video games, comics, etc..).

ManWithNoName wrote:I can see where they would do that. Alot of real world aircraft designs that didn't quite make it into production wind up being used for video games, flight sims and the like, and the oldschool Skystriker was kinda like the F-14 but not exactly. A YF-23 based Skystriker would make it more modern and something that people would recognize, but still be unique.

The Joes already HAVE a YF-23 version - the STORM EAGLE

http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/92/stormeagle/

I've read F-22, YF-23, YF-22 (Don't they drop the Y after the jet enters production and is no longer a prototype?), and if you look closely at the artwork for the Target ( ) Conquest, you can still see an original F-14 type Skystriker on the deck of the Flagg!!!

Honestly, I expect to see the F-22, if not for Resolute, then for the Movie - and I doubt we see too many vehicles for Resolute unless it becomes the post-movie Cartoon (god, there better be a post-movie Joe-Cartoon).

I'm surprised that nobody thought to bring in a small video camera to record the panel. Even if cameras were prohibited... since when do people listen to convention rules? I remember when the new Transformers cartoon footage was shown, there was nothing but amateur video taken on small video cameras, digital cameras with a video option, and cell phone video cameras. It was awhile before Hasbro OFFICIALLY released the footage, but we had enough fan videos to have already seen it.

Maybe something will pop up in a day or so on youtube.

From what I understand, they have Mongoose and her sister frisking everyone that refuses to go through the metal detectors. ;)

It doesn't make a lot of sense to use the YF-23 because it lost the competition to the F-22 which is currently fielded by the air force.

It is the YF-23, the designers specifically mentioned the fact that the model lost out to the F22 based on politics, even though it is actually the superior aircraft, so they elected to use that version.

There were plenty of recording devices in the audience, but with a small conference room and only a little over a hundred folks in there it would have been tough to conceal it, and you know, some of us actually want to honor Hasbro's wishes, heaven forbid. ;)

just goes to show that Joe fans are the most law-abiding, polite fans around... they actually honor the wishes of the Con.
(yeah... )

anyway.... this toon just sounds better and better. I don't know if I've been this excited for something G.I. Joe in a while. Maybe even topping the movie going into production!

Then they should call them Storm Eagles instead of Skystrikers. The Storm Eagle was a great little toy - the water gun feature easily foled up into the bottom of the plane, and after that first bout of "Ooh! Let me squirt water on my Cobras!" that everyone gets when you get a new Joe water-weapon, I never bothered with it again - just like the firing grips on the Night Attack Choppers or the cannon control on the Patriot Grizzly. Used about once, then slid out of sight for a more realistic look to the toy.

I actually wouldn't mind if they were called Skystrikers. But I want them to have the same exact colors for a cool nod to the original. The Thunderwing is a fantastic toy so we have a F-22. A 23 would be cool but I hope it is a little stylized like the 'Wing.

I wonder if the new Joe cartoon will have all the characters operating all the vehicles. I always found that hilarious in the oldschool cartoons to see that anyone and everyone could just hop in a skystriker or dragonfly and take off for some air combat, hehe.

I always thought that was a little goofy too. I realized though that only having one guy to fly a Skystriker doesn't make sense. The way I figured it was that Ace was the main guy who flew all the really hard missions and was the overall air combat expert. Everyone else helped where they could with various strengths in the aircraft but nobody was as good as the vehicles primary operator.

General Hawk wrote:The second Hasbro seminar was today and we got a special treat... the announcement of a new series of animated "shorts".

Similar to "Clone Wars", G.I. Joe: Resolute will feature 10 5-minute animated shorts leading up to a 10 minute finale, all adding up to a one hour feature. It will either be a web-based property, or Hasbro is also still shopping around potential broadcast partners.

This is the cartoon that Joe fans have wanted to see. Trust me on this. We got a few minute "sizzle" (featuring a scene that will not appear in the actual series) and it was simply amazing.

Animated by J & M Studios (the guys behind Avatar: The Last Airbender) and written by Warren Ellis, it is an adult, serious storyline with a fantastic animated style.

No lasers, no parachutes. ;)

The scene starts out in the jungle.... machine gun fire breaks out, and birds go flying into the sky. We see Duke and Roadblock running frantically through the trees as they're pursued by well equipped COBRA Troopers. Machine gun fire is frantically flying everywhere, and the two Joes break down a door and take cover in a small COBRA bunker.

The COBRA Troops advance...but Snake Eyes is squatting in the trees above. He leaps down and takes down a Trooper with his sword. Other COBRA's flank him, but he's too quick. He takes one down with a flurry of punches, rebounds off of a tree and kicks another in the face. In the same fluid motion he whips a throwing blade from his uniform and whips it striking a COBRA Trooper in the forehead. Yes, he takes out a COBRA Trooper with extreme prejudice.

He smacks around a few others, and the battle ends with him flipping a Trooper over his shoulder onto the ground, then taking out his sword thrusting it into the Trooper and twisting it, finishing him off.

As the gunfire stops, Duke and Roadblock emerge out into the woods, seeing Snake Eyes standing there victorious, with COBRA Troopers littering the ground around him. The Commando snaps off a quick salute.

This was... incredible. It gave me goosebumps, seriously. Animation was fluid and fantastic, the voice actors were good, the action was amazing, and there were no punches pulled. We are going to get an animated series that does what we've wanted it to do for twenty-five years.

There is a futuristic bend to the series, with the characters using very technological weapons (though they are all bullet-fed!), jetpacks, advanced aircraft, reconaissance equipment, etc...

Character designs have a strong influence from the classic versions. Duke wore a khaki shirt and green pants (though he wore a flak vest/backpack over it). COBRA Troopers had the familiar blue uniform, mask, and helmet with a black flak vest.

We saw artwork for the USS Flagg as it appears in the series, for an advanced jet fighter (based off of the YF 23 Fighter), transport planes, stealth planes, jetpacks, etc...

Saw character art for Lady Jaye, Tunnel Rat, Scarlett, Gung Ho, Duke, and Storm Shadow.

The Joe headquarters had a prominent American Flag.

This will be launched in the 1st Quarter of 2009, and there will be an accompanying toyline, though we didn't see any details on that.

Expect LOTS of cameos.

Lady Jaye was conceived as a character match for Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica.

Tons of action, no punches pulled, but don't expect a lot of actual blood.

Possibly "love triangle" between Duke, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes.

The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow ninja angle will play a big role.

COBRA Commander is ruthless. There is no holdover from the classic cartoon, this is COBRA Commander as he always should have been.

I know I'm a big Hasbro fanboy, but trust me when I say this was the single coolest G.I. Joe related anything I have seen in a long, long, loooong time. It got repeated standing ovations from everyone in attendance (they showed it 3 times) and this will BLOW YOU AWAY.

Raise your expectations, and wait for 1st Quarter '09. This will be very cool.

Justin

This is seriously going to rock. If the crew there meant the passion they claimed they have for G.I. Joe, this new toon will have no problem gaining new fans!

Only if it gets airtime on television. Web toons and/or straight-to-DVD isn't likely to expand the audience much beyond those that are already Joe fans.

So here's hoping this makes it to TV in some form or another...and in a decent timeslot.

Or, y'know, gets expanded to a full series after the movie hits....Avatar: The Last Airbender is already finished so that J&M Studios needs a new full-time project, after all. ;) In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is meant as a "test bed" for a full-time series in the wake of the movie.
