G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Film to Be Released in 3D

Hasbro Reaffirms 2012 Guidance that it Expects to Grow Revenues and Earnings Per Share Absent the Impact of Foreign Exchange

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hasbro, Inc (NASDAQ:HAS), and Paramount Pictures, announced today that G.I. JOE: RETALIATION will now be released in 3D. The film, originally slated for release in June 2012, is scheduled to be released March 29, 2013.

"It is increasingly evident that 3D resonates with movie-goers globally and together with Paramount, we made the decision to bring fans an even more immersive entertainment experience," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's President and CEO.

"In 2012, we continue to have several strong motion picture and television entertainment backed properties that are selling well at retail and our entertainment strategy remains strong and on-track," Goldner said. "Through our own Hasbro Studios for television and in partnership with several movie studios including Paramount, Universal, Sony and Relativity, we are creating entertainment experiences around many of our highly popular iconic brands. For the full year 2012, we continue to believe, absent the impact of foreign exchange, we will again grow revenues and earnings per share."

OK my guess is that Battleship scared the eff out of Hasbro since it bombed so hardcore.

Actually this looks/sounds like Hasbro had nothing to do with this decision. Rather this is all on the head of Paramount.

Paramount made the initial decision to move up the release date of Retaliation to cover Abrams not being able to get the new Trek film out for the summer. Now the last minute pull out is them too. Film studios have more flexibility to move dates than Hasbro does to move product lines. Sure the press release hits us via Hasbro since many of us have G.I. Joe club memberships. Keep in mind Hasbro has nothing to gain by moving G.I. Joe back. They miss Christmas 2012, and may have to sit on tons of product for the better part of the year, while not having anything ready to take the place of the Retaliation product. IDW and the retailers will not be happy about this either.

No this is all on Paramount.

More people wanted to see the Avengers again than see Battleship for the first time on it's opening weekend. Battleship became a running joke before it even hit theaters, so it's not a shock that it got beaten by a flick with an audience that's been built up by five other successful movies. I looked at the movie release schedule and Joe's pre-debut competition was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pixar's Brave. Brave will make a ton of money, but they've known this for a while. They didn't have anything as epic as the Avengers happening right before it. I don't think they were afraid of another Battleship-grade curb stomping, but Paramount just want to make that extra 3-D ticket money scratch to pad the box office.

I doubt that Hasbro wanted to push it back and this is just a PR statement to look unified about Paramount shifting it. Seriously, imagine how awkward it's going to be to sell a tie-in line that has no movie to tie into. Then again, there are a few other things to think about the March launch. Any hype that the Rock was getting during the build-up to Wrestlemania is long gone now, but the new movie date is one week before next year's Wrestlemania. That probably isn't a coincidence. Another thing is that stores usually slack on the Joe merch around that time of year to make room for movie lines, the thing that triggers all the "Wal-Mart got rid of the Joes" threads. This may or may not keep them in there after Christmas. These stores could get ticked off at being sold a movie line with no audience if things don't go well, but the non-movie army builders in the later waves might help. This is going to be downright weird to see in action. Has anything like this happened before?

OK well Hasbro is recalling all the movie toys now. :censored2 :billy :bs :vulgar
Might as well go out all this week & pick up anything you see before the stores get the message. I think TRU are the first ones to take the product off shelves so far.

P.S. Why does the reply button show this as a locked thread?

I'd like to know where you are getting that from, everything I am reading indicats it was a joint desion, Hasbro is the only ones to have released anything offical in responce to people's complaints as well, Paramout is noticably silent since the anouncement. There is nothing saying this is "all on paramount."

There is Amazing Spider-Man in that mix and DKR just after, ASM is a question mark but has much more visiblity than Joe (clearly), and could overshadow Joe easily (but that has been known for a long while as well). DKR is going to squash everything like avengers did (again known for a while).

There are some indicators that claim this is not the case, no recall at all, a buddy of mine at WM says he's heard nothing (but they are sticking to the 28th release date as well).

That does work. :D Inside joke.

Anyway, viewing the news reports about this on various sites since the new broke it seems a lot of people are upset about this, even non Joe fans. I was looking forward to it, looked a lot better than RoC and was going to be a summer prelude to The Dark Knight Rises.

Man somebody needs to get the first post up in the new year and I guess it's going to be me! I'm pretty excited for this year. The movie is on its way out and there are some SUPER cool figs on the horizon. The only concern I have is the plan for after Retaliation. We really haven't seen one bit of news in the way of post-Retaliation figs or animated series.

Does anyone have an inside scoop on when we will see wave 2 in stores? A couple of e-tailers have wave 2 up for preorder with a February 11th target date.

Yep probably February is when we will see whatever they have left over. I'm guessing March or end of February for wave 2.
