*snrk* HUH?! What? Reviews? Oh yeah.

Hey look, a new toy! One would think that the new stuff is hitting me finally, though it looks like they skipped the end of PoC, 'cause here's the 30th Anniversary figures! Well, one of 'em anyway. I don't mind so much, 'cause he seems to have what he needs, though he is missing stuff as you can see from General Hawk's review. Not only is he missing his (mostly useless) gun, but he's also missing the camo paint apps on his arms and legs! It's odd, though I don't mind so much. I could never get anyone to hold that gun well anyway, and without the camo his blank body is at least a uniform gray when the armor is off (though I would rather have camo all over than not at all).

Image

Image

Interesting changes for something that is still in the same price range. Less stuff for the same price? Well...whatever. In the long run, like I said, I don't really care. He could have used a pistol (like it says he has on his filecard) but when you've got a few IGs already, this guy just needs to fill the front lines with their big 'ol guns!

Image

And what a big gun it is. You'll notice that he doesn't have the same connector that came with Destro, that allowed for this:

Image

And as you can see the same thing still works. Sadly:

Image

The ball joint cannot fit in the hole on the big gun. The peg can, but that's supposed to go in the armor...

At any rate, you CAN shove the ball joint into the armor and stretch it out, and kinda make it work.

Image

Image

Image

So in the end, I don't care that the connector is missing, 'cause it's hard to get it work, and he holds it just fine without it!

Image

'Course there is the thing with the two backpacks. You can see here that he's using the small backpack, and that works. The big one doesnt:

Image

The bullet belt from the 25th line isn't made to fit in the slot from that RoC backpack. Thing is, when you look at the artwork at the top (which I didn't until I was finished takin' pics) you can see the small pack is shoved in under the gun:

Image

Image

So I guess you have options (second pic is just me trying to make it look better). Though, honestly I dunno what the bigger backpack is supposed to be for. Personally I like making this some sorta multi-gun, so it'll fire bullets, or it can be hooked to the big generator backpack for a crazy beam type weapon. I mean, you look at that gun and you just KNOW it has to be more badass than just a regular machine gun with a bullet belt. I like me some futuristic weapons, and that thing fills that role NICELY.

Speaking of filling roles:

Image

Image

How awesome is that? This is a rare hole to be filled here. The package doesn't even say he's a heavy IG, but the filecard mentions it at the end. He's a regular IG, just decked out in the heavy stuff! AWESOME. Just a great friggin' idea, you know? I love the look of him, and he's ripe for army building.

*WARNING WARNING*

I've bascially finished the reivew, but OMG you had to have been thinking of mixing and matching when you first saw this figure. Well guess what? If it wasn't bad enough that this guy is good for army building, he also just has the BEST head ever for just about anything.

Image

I...I couldn't help myself. The rest of the reivew will be for showing off the amazing way this figure's head just makes everything better.

Image

First off, the prerequisite mix between the old Destro. I'm using that body for Scrap Iron, and GOOD LORD his head just works with every possible combination. I just don't know what my final mix will be, but it may be this:

Image

Or I may just swap heads.

Image

Next, the head works for a sort of new style IG, with either of those bodies:

Image

Image

Or hey, how about an accelerator suit or an arctic version?

Image Image

Or maybe you want your own modern version, like something they could have done in the movie?

Image

Finally, my personal favorite: a suited body guard for Destro on those important outtings:

Image

Image

OKAY OKAY, by this point it's just me playing around more so than a review, so I assume this has gotten my point across. This is a DANGER figure, because not only is he awesome all on his own, but the mix and match possibilites are endless. I kinda wish they would finally make a new standard Iron Grenadier already, because the problems with the 25th versions were way more evident now as I was trying to pose them with the new guys. If they ever do get to new IGs, I REALLY hope they stick with this gray scheme, because the details stand out WAY better than on the black helmet with the red paint blobbed on to cover everything.

If it isn't obvious already, I highly suggest buying multiples of this figure in either form (PoC or 30th). There is no way to NOT use this guy.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

No problem! I know I'm already going to be getting another for parts. I'm using this one for Scrap Iron, actually....the head swap just looks SO good. These colors are way better for Scrap Iron! I'm just not sure the red body works for the IG, so I wana get another, swap some parts to make the IG dress similar to Scrap Iron but not match him, then use the Destro red body to make that SAW Viper I had put together in Destro's review.

...that's the plan, anyway.

Awesome review as always.

To go a bit off topic-Not seen this Destro before:

Image

Just wondering if he is a mix-n-match or was I sleeping (which is highly likely since so many Destro's were hitting at once a few years ago).

That Destro was part of a TRU 3 pack called Senior High Command or something along those lines.

I'm going to assume that was around ROC, which was a bit overwhelming with releases. Like I said I was asleep LOL. Which is what I did most of the ROC run as far as exclusives went.

THEN YOU MISSED OUT ON ALL THE RECOLORS!!!

Seriously, some were good, but you didn't miss much. I can't remember what was in that pack, but I know I wanted it for something. Anyway, he's also using the head from heavy Destro, so he looks even cooler! Though, of course, I only swapped it to the blue body because I wanted the grey body to match the IG head. I usually use that Destro head with the grey body. The blue body currently has Deep Six's head and Red Star's blue had to make a dashing general of sorts (pretty sure I got the idea from General Scarlett).

Great minds think alike, as I totally put Scrap Iron's head on the Destro. Figured the armored look fit him well.

And I REALLY like the IG head on Arctic Destro. I wonder if it would have peg-warmed if it had been packed like that originally....hmm.

And you've convinced me to sell my POC IG and get the 30th instead. No camo all over looks better than the camo, IMO.

VERY well! So well that I wonder why they didn't make this mold for him, actually. In any case, I've switched the heads now. The red gear goes better with him than the red body (since he originally wore a red vest) but I'm not sold completely on the red IG, so I'm very much looking forward to getting at least one or two more to have a standard one, and then another so I can scavenge his head for....something. Dunno yet, but his head is like action figure gold!

And I REALLY like the IG head on Arctic Destro. I wonder if it would have peg-warmed if it had been packed like that originally....hmm.

I'm sure he wouldn't have. When it's a character that you see a lot, they tend to warm (except the poor Jungle Viper...his awesome self is warming all over for some reason that is an afront to god). I think an arctic IG woulda went faster just for being an army builder. Honestly though, Arctic Destro was way cooler than people give 'em credit for. I mean sure, it's Destro again, but at the very least we've never had an arctic version before AND he came with some pretty awesome stuff!

I agree! I wasn't sure at first when I checked the PoC review and saw the camo missing, but when you have the armor off (though it is quite plain) I think it looks better than just having the camo on the arms and legs and nowhere else.

Oh, so this is actually a repaint... or a depaint, I suppose. I thought you bought the PoC version like I did and Justin did, and yours just inexplicably wasn't painted. Huh. So they re-released it as part of the 30th? That's kinda weird... I am usually all for moving forward with designs, but why re-release something so recent, and if you're gonna do so as part of a 30th Anniversary celebration, shouldn't the color scheme be black, red, and gold?

I dunno, it's just odd.

Anyhoo, I bought two of the PoC version this summer, and I'll be damned if I ever figured out anything to do with them, so I'll likely steal some of your ideas. I'm most likely gonna go with placing the IG head on the RoC Destro body, 'cause I have two extras of RoC Destro as it is that I dunno what to do with.

Also, holy mercy that vac-metal variant of RoC Destro is the tits. I assumed you'd placed the recent suitcase-of-cash Destro head on the body or something at first. Damn, I really like that dark blue, too. May have to pursue that figure next summer.

My RoC Destro body has a Zap head. He's a 1930s Saturday morning serial-type pulp hero, a two-fisted pilot adventurer I'm calling Gray Ghost, 'cause I'm determined to steal that name every few years. Now I'll put two IG heads on the extra Destro bodies and... justify it somehow.

I'm rambling. My new job is kicking my butt something fierce; I can't think.

Great review!

Hard to say why, but I'm glad they did! Somehow I doubt I'll see that last PoC wave...

Sounds like a plan! It was my favorite mix up, to tell ya the truth (though I think the IG shoulder pauldron really brings it together).

Also, holy mercy that vac-metal variant of RoC Destro is the tits. I assumed you'd placed the recent suitcase-of-cash Destro head on the body or something at first. Damn, I really like that dark blue, too. May have to pursue that figure next summer.

No no, you had it right! I did put the new Destro's head on that repainted body; it originally came with a standard RoC head.

Anything that uses the name Gray Ghost is bound to be awesome; it's too bad it's just been limited to Batman: The Animated Series.

Great review!

Great review, as always, Alexx.

I'm glad you're showing some love to the 30th IG figures. I love them, and can't quite figure out why everyone else seems lukewarm on them. Fine by me, though...more of a chance for me to find them at retail.

Like you, I love that head. I might take your idea and clear out a couple peg-warming Arctic Destros.

My only complaint is that I wish they did a little paint app or dry brushing on the basic figure itself. Not having that red and black camo is a vast improvement, but I wish there was a little more paint detailing. But that's something I myself can easily fix.

I am counting down the months until the new Techno-Vipers are released and you get your hands on them....

I agree! I think he would be PERFECT with the the armor on the front of the body painted red like the armor on the sides of his arms. I mean, Destro was a complete figure with the gear on or off. This guy is serviceable, but looks like he's missing paint apps with the gear off (though not as badly as the one with the camo).

I will push over small children for them. Even kids that aren't going for those figures! If they're in the isle, I'm pushing them over. Heck, I'll go out of my way to push them over!

...wait, that's not any different than normal...

Have you tried plugging the ammo strip thing that came with Destro into that slot? Because I'm pretty sure he was supposed to have all this gear originally, and he didn't really have a place for that strip to go, so...

If that works, I think it may qualify me as an official Techno Viper.

Yeah, I tried that, but the it's too small. So, the opposide of the belt he came with! That big pack was originally made to take the belt that came from RoC Heavy Duty and pretty much nothing else. It's pretty much just a toss-in pack, as far as I'm concerned.

But no, I'm afraid you're gona have to do FAR less thinking and activity to qualify as a Techno-Viper.
