It's Skydive! No seriously, he's got the same name as the Sky Patrol guy. 'Course, I wouldn't have known without General Hawk pointing it out, 'cause I don't remember Sky Patrol at all. Nonetheless, it's a cool nod that'll stay just a nod, since the filecard only has the name in common. This one is yet another that tells you what he is, that he's good at it, and gives a little story about what's going on. This time, Skydive has to fly to the jungle where Shadow Tracker can taste his fear!

Of course, to get to the jungle, Skydive has to use some pretty heavy stuff:

Image

Image

Image

Heavy stuff, and only heavy stuff!

Image

The guy is loaded down with basically his only feature: the gear and the jetpack with the pop-out wings. As you can see, the gear is really detailed with all those fancy pockets, and it makes his legs just about useless. Then there's those canisters on his back for...um...air? Best I can make of it. I don't know what else those could be, 'cause they can't fit any other way. That, and I dunno how the heck this thing flys...seems more like a glider pack. But hey, this guy is gona land in the jungle at one point, so he's gotta be able to take that all off, right?

Image

No, I mean, all of it; he can't go walkin' around with that junk on.

Image

There we go! Pretty sweet, actually. With nothing in the way, the articulation works perfectly, and he can hold pretty much anything with those perfect hands!

Image

Like, ah...

Image

His one pistol. Okay, I know - I can't complain that much. He's got so much stuff that you can't expect him to come with a full load of weapons. Still, I can't help but think that it's not more than what many of the other figures are coming with. They could have squeezed one more small rifle in there, like this:

Image

I do find myself kinda at odds with the idea that they need to shove as much stuff in the package as they can, but in this case, they could have gone the extra mile and put in a bigger gun and mold a spot on the gear or pack for it to be stowed. This guy is on a mission to a Cobra base in the jungle; he could use something other than a pistol! Of course...being who I am, I DO have a ton of options to give him, but it makes sense to judge these on a case by case basis. Ya know, the complete package.

But hey, that's a lot of complaining! Do I like this guy? Yeah! He's cool! I suppose I was a little bored, at first, but that is always fixed with a little childish run around the room making plane noises. I'm a sucker for a jetpack, but I can't help but wonder how long they'll last in the more serious days of G.I. Joe.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Like I mentioned in the Shadow Tracker review, it seems like everyone means business these days! No more lasers 'n bright colors. No, jetpacks get treated more like this when you consider what he's got to go against with the jungle figures they've made so far:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

You've got crazy snipers that blend in to the trees, and when they pick you off like you were in Duck Hunt, you've only got THAT on the ground waiting for you. 'Course he does have two bombs to drop...maybe he'll hit Shadow Tracker, if he's lucky.

Okay, I know what you're thinking: "Alexx, you're rambling. What's the deal here?" Well...i'm kinda torn. I don't think this one is a buy-on-sight, but he's not bad, either. He gets done what he's tryin' to get done. He's a guy with a jetpack, and jetpacks are always cool. Somehow, though...it's just missing something. I remember General Hawk (the toy) with his awesome jetpack, and I loved the heck out of 'em. It was a fun toy (and my first G.I. Joe ever). This one, though, bring the jetpack idea into a more realistic look, and...well, I just don't think jetpacks need to be realistic. When he's in his gear, he just flies, whereas G. Hawk was fully poseable and able to do ridiculous things that someone with a jetpack shouldn't be able to do. I just think that jetpacks don't NEED to be realistic, ya know? He's a big chunk, and I did have a good time flying him around, but when you take the gear off, he's just a dude with a pistol! One way or another, he's missing something. He's needs something else, and he needs a bit more poseablity while in the awesome gear.

So, with that said, I think this guy is a solid "Neat." Cool, certainly looks awesome, but also seems to be missing some of that action figure goodness that I've come to love with a majority of the recent releases. He's really freakin' cool without the gear, but he'll need stuff! I'd get 'em for parts, mostly.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

Cool as always.

I have passed on this guy a couple of times, the gear seems a bit too busy to me, I don't want to knock him but at the same time I can't think of a great incentive to buy him either.

I laughed at the same things :)

I actually like Sky Dive. I still don't have him in hand but he is on the way with the rest of my wave 4. I think he would fare pretty well if he was following/followed by Para Vipers. Once they all got their gear off the would be too tired to fight.

I hope they don't disregard this type of sci-fi fantasy as they go forward because this guy would have easily been a favourite if he came out in the original line. I am a sucker for figures that have their own personal vehicle, Blizzard, Gen. Hawk, Stalker, Zartan, etc.

I personally think the jetpack would be a great reuse for a PoC T.A.R.G.A.T.

This figure is one of a select few that make me break my #1 rule about action figures. My rule #1 is no matter how cool a figure looks if his gear restricts his poseability then you have a nice little plastic statue and I don't dig that. Skydive does have limited mobility in his gear but he just looks so freakin' cool and I love this fig. I loved Sky Patrol as a kid plus I'm a sucker for jet packs.

Yeah, that was pretty much my end result. I can't completely suggest buying him, but he's really cool looking, otherwise. Just depends on if the cool-factor is the high point for ya.

Thank you, thank you! I was staring at this guy for what felt like forever before I finally came up with a joke. Also, it sorta sums up my feelings about him; I mean, General Hawk is a toy that you can fly around and have him shoot at stuff! Skydive can pretty much...fly. He's not gona be doing much in the air, and though that's pretty realistic, it is also kinda boring.

DANGIT! That woulda made a great joke!

Oh, you're right! That would make for a perfect updated T.A.R.G.A.T.! Hopefully he would still be moveable as well.

Yeah, the jetpack thing is what made me buy him as well; other than the fact that he's just cool looking. It took me awhile to really get a bearing on how I felt about the figure. I've been talking with my friend Neutron Hacker and he suggested using a smaller vest, and that would free up his articulation and allow him to be fun for me, like General Hawk was.

Out of all of your reviews this was the funniest ever. I bought Skydive on sight since I don't know if or when I'll ever see him again but I'm in no rush to open him. Keep in mind he's not alone against the Shadow Tracker since Duke, and the gang are on the ground with a Sky Hawk up in the air with him.

On the canceled Desert Strike Ripcord, upon which Skydive is based, I had always plugged the canisters into the bottom pegs of the jetpack to act as rocket engines. With the exhaust pointed downwards, of course. At least that's how the Hong Kong retailers showed it on ebay when I bought it.

Image
Please forgive the crappy picture.

I still vastly prefer Ripcord's paint scheme to Skydive's, and like Chuckdawg, I bought Skydive mostly because I might not see it again, and it lies unopened still. Happy to see Shadow Tracker and his creeeepy text, though (still haven't found him :sadness)!

Ya know I did the same thing. That makes sense for the rocket pack idea. The only problem is with that is there is no place for the missiles.

Yeah... If you don't plug the rocket nozzles in all the way and leave some room, you can kind of plug the missiles in underneath them. At least I think so. Don't ask me how it looks because my missiles are in a bag o' accessories, since my Ripcord was always displayed without them. I suppose the missiles don't plug into his shoulders all that well, and probably look silly there.

Um... am I the only one who thought the "canister" things were lights?

If so, I'm gonna feel dumb, 'cause I used 'em for that purpose on my lazy Tunnel Rat custom:

Image

Whatever the case, I am stunned at how lukewarm everyone is towards this figure. I paid $15 for the pre-production version 'cause it briefly looked like these might never hit retail, and I have been obsessively photographing it for months! I think the leg articulation works pretty well even with all the crazy gear, and without it he looks awesome, so no harm either way; I was shocked to realize after several months that his torso is just the regular reactive armor torso; with those bulky arms, it looks like a whole new torso.

I do prefer the pre-production color scheme, but one benefit of Skydive is that you can strip off the gear and have a pretty good facsimile of the unproduced (*sniff*) Sigma 6 Short-Fuze. Unfortunately, I can't find a good head; Stalker has the dreads, but he also has a hat, and Shadow Tracker has dreads too, but he doesn't have skin; even Sigma 6 never suggested beloved old Joes should be skinless...

Seriously, am I the only one who unabashedly loves this figure?!?

Another great review! I found myself looking forward to him landing because I had a feeling we'd see ole Shadow Tracker again!

I display my Sky Dive with the jet/exhaust engines(?) facing down. I personally look at it not as much as a jetpack, but more like a glider that would serve to slow down Sky Dive's decent. Those engines are so small I thought they would be used in short bursts for coarse correction or evasive manuevers. Of coarse that hasn't stopped me from flying him around the house making jet pack sounds as well

Everyone is welcome to use anything however they want! Nonetheless, if those were lights, then they must be built to BURN YOUR FACE OFF. 'Cause thems some pretty HUGE lights! Maybe that's what happened to Shadow Tracker?

Whatever the case, I am stunned at how lukewarm everyone is towards this figure. I paid $15 for the pre-production version 'cause it briefly looked like these might never hit retail, and I have been obsessively photographing it for months! Oh yeah, I was thinking of looking into the pre-production one as well! Honestly, I bought this figure with full assumption that I was going to love it. And, you know, it still is awesome. I mean, the detail just blows me away! I just wish there was more to do with him than fly him around. I'm just as torn with the Para-Viper. It's so cool and detailed, but he's only good for falling, and when the gear is off, he looks unprepared.

I assume this means you don't have Shadow Tracker yet? 'Cause when you get 'em you'll notice that you could pull those dreads right off! Well, you might need a bit of help from a knife, but it's really only attaches at the top of the head. I didn't want to try, but I am fairly sure you can pull those dreads off with minimal force. Once you've got dreads, it's just a matter of finding the head and helmet that you want and just gluing the dreads on! Heck, you could even cut the dreads so that they'll better copy the Short-Fuze look that you're going for.

Finally, I doubt you're the only one that loves this figure! Like I said, I like it, I just find myself kinda bored with his playability. That, and it's amazing what a good bio can do for a figure. If they had said anything about the character or went into detail on his gear, that would have made a big difference! Instead, it's just the same junk about how he's skilled at what he does and tells about where he's going. It's not like I don't have my own imagination, but I like at least a tiny spark to get things jumping, ya know?

Maximus wrote:Another great review! I found myself looking forward to him landing because I had a feeling we'd see ole Shadow Tracker again!

See, that's what I was thinking! They keep calling it a "rocket pack" with "turbojet engines", but those cannisters can only slide down to the side of his shoulders, so they can only be able to correct his decent. For all intents and purposes, this looks like an orbital drop pack! I can't imagine how this thing would fly otherwise. It's gotta be gliding! However, like you said; you can't help running around with him and "flying." My problem comes in there, though. Like I said, with the old General Hawk figure, he's completely able to move, making me fly him around doing acrobatic stunts and shooting his gun 'n such. Skydive is completely restricted to...falling, or gliding. Falling with style? Once again, it doesn't kill the figure for me, but sometimes there's such a thing as too much gear.

That General Hawk figure is still one of my favorites. I just wish his helmet would have been a bit more cartoon accurate. That figure set the bar pretty high for any future jet pack weilding figures in my opinion. I'd love to see an updated version of that General Hawk figure!
