Thor Movie Figures

Postby Alexx » Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:46 am

Well, I didn't think these would show so early.

Image

I didn't pick up a Thor yet (not sure if I will) but Odin and Loki were real cool lookin'. They're still cool figures, but man...those weapons. I don't know.

Image

Image

He's pretty freakin' cool lookin', but the weapons are completely POINTLESS. For adult and child alike. Here's your first clue:

Image

This is just one of many pics of him falling over with that junk in his hands. The rest weren't taken 'cause he sword kept dropping out of his hand. Anyway, here's what they look like when I got him to stand:

Image

Image

The shield there has blades that pop out, and the sword...explodes into more swords or something.

Image

Now, I tell ya, I was actually excited about these ridiculous things when I saw them. I don't like action features, but I love it when they shove 'em into accessories. It's just that...usually, they give them another normal accessory (like you'll see with Loki). Odin has nothing but these useless chunks. And BOY are they useless. I mean, the shield is kinda cool, but the sword...well you can't use it in either form! "But Alexx!" You say, "That stuff is made for the kids!" Is it? Is it really? I don't know...when I was a kid, I was annoyed as heck when my toys couldn't hold their accessories. These things flop around 'cause they're so heavy, and the sword...well it just doesn't stay in there. That's no fun for anyone. And what's with that action feature?! What is it DOING? I mean, an extenting sword, a glowing sword, maybe the blade opens and lightning pops out...ANY of those things would have been ridiculous and cool compared to this confusing mess. On top of that, his cape barely stays on, so if you're buying Odin, you're only buying a cool figure and paying for a bunch of other junk.

To salvage him, I dug through the accessory drawer and gave him a good substitute for Gungnir:

Image

Image

Final thing I did to him was wrap those clear rubber bands around his hip joints (parts that attach to the body) so his legs didn't spin around when I tried to just push his legs forward. I'd fault him for this, but they seem to think this is standard for movie superhero figures nowadays (had to do this for most of the Wolverine line, including Deadpool). Other thing was that his hip joints (the actual ball joint) are TIGHT as heck; I was afraid of breakin' him.

Image

Image

Next is Loki. I felt he was a little better, 'cause his weapon was semi-useable. Still had to use the rubber bands on his hips, though. Also, the neck is just horrible...the joint for the neck is not flesh colored, so he has this big brown strip on his neck.

Image

Thing that makes him a little better is the knives, and that his hands are stiffer so he can hold them and his sword-thing.

Image

Image

I don't know what that feature does, but at least the blades pop off and do this:

Image

Image

Kinda neat, at kinda what I was hoping for with these crazy things. Kinda throw-away, but at least I can see how it would be fun.

Finally, I threw this together 'cause I thought I saw a little Serpentor in his face and the colors of his clothes:

Image

Take it or leave it.

Anyway, these are hit and miss. I don't regret Odin completely 'cause he's cool looking and I like having a representation of Odin...however, I don't blame anyone for skipping him, if you don't feel like rearming him and fixing his hips. Loki is cool, though! If you don't mind the neck thing, I'd get 'em. I'm not planning on getting much more, though the stuff shown at Toy Fair looked pretty awesome.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

Good to finally see some close up pics of these. Wonder why they had to call him "Marvel's Odin."

Is the neck ball, joe sized? That's all I wanna know as far as these figs go, now that I see they have a ball hip (which sucks).

No, not at all. The heads are on a joint, like old Marvel Legends. Can't pull these heads off.

Any word on whether they're going to do comic style figures like they did with Iron Man 2? Because these movie figs do nothing for me. Of course, they couldn't really go nuts with the comic stuff like they did with Iron Man. I guess Iron Man lends itself to a lot of cool toys because there are tons of designs to draw from. With Thor, you've got what? Classic Thor and current Chain Mail Thor? Maybe that bearded battle-axe Thor that was around for a while. Beta Ray Bill would be cool, I guess. Oooo...and Frog Thor.

I would punch a nun to get a Frog Thor.

They put a condition on any future comic versions. First the movie line must sell well. So I don't see it happening.

I picked up frost giant and took him back the next day,a very cool fig but he was way too floppy, couldn't hold any of his weapons very well and $12.99 did not help.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I get to geek out vicariously through your reviews, man. I've had no sense of what these figures are like, so this was very cool to read.

And it really, really sucks that he heads don't pop off; that Loki head is really nice.

Also, I hate ball hips.

Alexx, I'm curious: why have you never started a toy blog? It seems like you're very prolific and enthusiastic, and presumably that'd carry over into a site of your own.

On the other hand, there are so many toy blogs already, each with the obligatory links to all the other toy blogs... maybe it's best that your reviews are at JBL. Whatever the case, I love 'em!

Glad to hear it!

Yeah, they're nice enough figures, but hard to recommend. They have a similar setup to the Iron Man figures...it's just that most of the articulation doesn't work as well. And MAN those hip joints are annoyingly tight! But only the joint itself; the part pluged into the body spins around like a helecopter.

Alexx, I'm curious: why have you never started a toy blog? It seems like you're very prolific and enthusiastic, and presumably that'd carry over into a site of your own.

Bascially a mild irritation with doing new things. I've been a crotchety old man from the day I was born, and I'm real slow to get into something that has a learning curve, or a perceived one. I made a blog not long ago, but i've been putting off the work it'll take to actually...you know, USE it. I'm bascially gona have to make a page, see how it looks, and change it if it's not the way I want it to look. I'm just not looking forward to the trial and error that comes with anything new. I don't know how to upload the pics, dunno if it resizes them automatically, don't know how to to sort the pages into separate toylines...etc. Of course, I'll continue to not know so long as I do nothing with the page. It's a vicious cycle!

On the other hand, there are so many toy blogs already, each with the obligatory links to all the other toy blogs... maybe it's best that your reviews are at JBL. Whatever the case, I love 'em!

Yeah, whenever I get around to using the blog, I'll keep my joe reviews here and on Joesightings. Everything else will probably start there (and I've had a ton of requests to put all my He-Man jokes in one place, so that'll collect them all at one point). Just don't know how I would get folks to read it 'n such, like you said. When it's on a forum, you've already got a readership, in a way (or, at least someone will look at it!) If I start the blog, I guess I'll just put a link in my sig at the various forums I visit and see what happens.

Alexx if you ever get a blog LMK I will add it to my links, not a great deal of traffic but hey LOL.

The whole promo thing is tough cause I tend to try to not do it, but if I don't no one knows what I am doing on my site soooooo. It is really a double edged sword.

I have tried the blog set up for Toxie/Scale wars and it was an epic fail. Multiple pics in order are not something that wordpress likes. Anyway that is why I don't use it although I have seen reviewers use it effectively, but I'm not sure if that has something to do with the text or not.

My Target has had a whole case of wave 1 on the pegs for a week without one being bought.
I looked over the Thor figures & wow what a variety of bad paint.
I will just pick up the supporting characters.
