At last, the Joes have an army builder! Well okay, so they've had this before when the Steel Brigade came out originally. I mean, that's what they're supposed to be, but you wouldn't have army built them 'cause it was hard to get ahold of more than one! You see, the Steel Brigade (look at me act like I'm tellin' you something you don't already know) was a mail away figure that was supposed to represent YOU! The player----I mean, the kid! You send away to Hasbro with your name, and they'd make a code name for ya and a pick your specialty and send you your figure and personalized filecard! There's probably more to it and plenty of info I don't have but...well you get the idea. The only other shot at a Joe army builder that we've had after the Steel Brigade guys is the Reservist and those ugly Troopers with their horrifying Duke Arms. And I'll tell ya - I don't like my troopers to be unmasked! I want faceless masses!

*ahem* but that's just a personal thing, mind you. Which will probably be reflected in the review.

So lets get started! Right away on the filecard it tells you to BUY MANY OF THEM, because it says they're the backbone of G.I. Joe's fighting force and the "grunts!" I don't believe I've mentioned this in the other 30th reviews, but I gotta say that these filecards are MUCH more fun than they were in RoC. Not only are they well written and actually tell you a bit about the character (other than "he's good at A and he uses B to fight Cobra") but finally - FINALLY - we have caught back up with the friggin' PAST and have brought back the description of all accessories involved! Why did they ever stop that? I LOVED that when I was a kid! Especially sometime in the 90's when they showed the full pic of the figure and made up stuff for what was on their person, as well.

Image

Image

When you read the description on the card, you can see all the items! Paratrooper combat rifle (with bayonet!), Ballistic helmet, tactical backpack, rocket storage pack (with rockets), rocket launcher, heavy machine gun (with stand), and a....rotary grenade launcher? ....okay, so nobody's perfect! It's obvious that some accessory changes were made along the way, 'cause we don't have a grenade launcher but we DO have a second rifle (looks like a SCAR?). Though I believe a grenade launcher would have provided even more variability in your troops, I don't really mind the second rifle. Heck, there's still a cool amount of variability anyway!

I wana backtrack to the figure, however, before we get to the accessories completely. Above you can see the helmet, "scarf" thing, armor, and bandolier.

Image

Image

Without it all you have Beachhead's head along with Snake Eyes' torso and the Shock Trooper's arms and legs!

Image

Of course, as you can see, that's also the Shock Trooper's armor, which means you can still take the Shock Trooper's walkie talkie and do this:

Image

Now mind you, HE DOES NOT COME WITH THE WALKIE TALKIE, I'm just showin' you that you can use it on both guys, if you so choose.

Finally you can see the trademark Steel Brigade helmet and Duke's 25th bandolier. Both of those items in particular worried me slightly, 'cause you can see the Beachhead head's chin sticking out from under the helmet a bit, but it honestly didn't bother me in the slightest! The color matches the helmet, so most of the time you can't even see it, or it blends in - on top of that, the helmet just fits perfectly and stays on tight! As for the bandolier; I was afraid it would make him too bulky, since he was already wearing the armor, but this also didn't end up bothering me as it's nice and out of the way! It doesn't restrict the arms at all - AND - amazinly, I like the figure better with the bandolier than without! I honestly thought I would be removing it. Dunno why! It looks and functions fantastically.

But man, FUNCTION is gona be a major key in this review. We'll get to that later in the final gushing section.

Image

Image

Now, back to the accessories! What a FANTASTIC idea! I've already told you that the Steel Brigade figures were originally supposed to represent YOU in G.I. Joe, so of course each of you are gona have different specialties. Maybe you're a bazooka guy like Zap? Perhaps you're a Grunt like...*ahem* Grunt? Maybe you're a paratrooper like Ripcord? How about a machinegunner like Roadblock? YOU'RE ALL COVERED! As I said, the filecard says "BUY MANY" and the accessory count says no different!

Image

When you buy a bunch of these guys, you already have a few different specialties! You can bascially perform the same duties as the originals, since they're all faceless and helmeted. Pick a guy to be you and outfit him accordingly! It's almost too bad that G.I. Joe wasn't as popular with the kids as it used to be, because these Steel Brigade guys were built perfectly for this! You could send away for them just like the old days, but they would come with whichever set of accessories ends up being your favored skillset!

Image

...then again, you wouldn't be able to army build them like this, and I gotta say it's pretty dang cool to have some easily obtainable Joe grunts. As I had said before, too: they're faceless! I've always loved helmeted figures more than non-helmeted figures, so it's SO COOL to have good guy grunts with helmets. Seems like the only way to get cool helmeted guys was to join Cobra! Now the Joes can hide their identities too! Still, the best part about being faceless is that if you DO choose to use this as your inserted character, you can! (You know, if you're not an amazing customizer like more than half the Joe community).

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Ah...well, you can get your own code name from anywhere! Everyone has a varied skillset, and sometimes it has to do with things that aren't so much "skills" as they are...vices.

Anyway, as you could see from the bloody mess pics, he holds that gun VERY well! In fact, from earlier pics you could see that he holds the bazooka well too! And the assault rifle! He ain't bad with the machine gun either (could be better, but that's the fault of the gun, really). As I said: function would be major here, and that's 'cause he FUNCTIONS! He holds his weapons well, the armor doesn't get in the way, the helmet stays on - what more do you need? I feel this is majorly important in a time where I feel the "toy" part of these figures is starting to die off! I mean, with Lowlight there's problems with too many accessories an an inaibilty to hold his rifle that ALSO falls apart. Then there's the AWESOME Snake Eyes, but his pistol doesn't stay in his holster (something that the Cobra Trooper shares with him), and Snake Eyes doesn't even hold the pistol amazingly well either (a problem I had with Stalker as well). I can easily overlook these things 'cause I'm not playing with them like I used to - but if I did? Accessories falling off, things lost...chaos! Once again, they're still not HUGE things with me 'cause you can get around these things by just not using the holster or not caring about how they're holding the weapon.

The Steel Brigade figure has NONE of these problems! Granted, he doesn't have any holsters, but he holds each weapon with an iron grip and he poses like a dream! You can get him in a kneeling pose, he can hold each weapon with BOTH hands without having to fidget with 'em, and the head has a GREAT range of motion for whatever pose you like! Like I said, though, all of this is so amazing because he's still a TOY! Granted, i'm not saying he's a diamond in the rough - there are plenty of figures that have continued to be great toys...I guess some recent ones have just made me think otherwise. The Steel Brigade figure, as an opposite of such, is a breath of fresh air! This would be the one to buy for little cousins or nephews or neices to get them into G.I. Joe! A+! Top score! Well played! Bravo!

Now, I leave you with this for no good reason:

Whoo-hoo! New review goodness!

(Can you tell I'm off work for a few days? I've got lots of time on my hands).

Alexx wrote:You send away to Hasbro with your name, and they'd make a code name for ya and a pick your specialty and send you your figure and personalized filecard!

Even better: you got to choose all that stuff yourself. And the file card they whipped together was full of hyperbolic goodness; Sgt. Slaughter and Super Trooper had nothing on my Steel Brigade figure, lemme tell ya...

If I knew about that, I'd forgotten. And I have 4 or 5 Shock Troopers, so I shoulda noticed.

Also, I hate the Shock Trooper armor! It looks swell, but it has that Techno Viper/Pit Commando issue we discussed at Justin's site; the dang clasp will NOT stay closed.

Great review, man. I can't wait to get this guy. Are you gonna nab the Snake Eyes variant? EDIT: Never mind, I'm blind. Or perhaps illiterate.

Poor, poor Duke :(

Haha, excellent review Alexx. I didn't think I'd enjoy the Steel Brigade Trooper, but it really is a great figure. I've got 2 so far, but I've got the itch that says "get more!"

Sorry for the immediate double-post; it's hard to remember which photos I want to respond to once the reply page is up. I'm a delicate creature, easily flustered.

Incidentally, I just counted; I'm responsible for the latest post in 14 of your reviews. I need a life, although in my defense, they are very entertaining reviews.

I'm mildly butthurt that they reused the Beachhead head, but I have to remind myself: it's not Hasbro's fault that I bought Pursuit of Cobra Beachhead four times. And it is the best balaclava head they've ever made, and obviously it's got to be a masked dude...

Wait. One of yours IS the Snake Eyes variant, isn't it? How'd I miss that? EDIT: So both of yours are the Snake Eyes version? Or does the Snake Eyes version include SE's arms, in addition to his torso?

Now then, I'm off to read your review more closely so's I don't ask more questions that have already been answered.

Yeah, I knew I shoulda done a little research at first. I figured they would come with whatever your specialty was as well, but from Yojoe it looks like they just came with a rifle - still cool, though! Anyway, EVEN BETTER that you could choose that stuff yourself! I wish I would have been into joes when this was going on.

I get it!

...but only 'cause of that trick what you told me, with the titles of the photos and all.

You're learning! Soon, it will begin. I won't tell you what, but you'll know when it happens. Lot of folks tell me it does when they get to know me too well. Something about insanity, visions, spots, animal-like things. I dunno.

Also, I hate the Shock Trooper armor! It looks swell, but it has that Techno Viper/Pit Commando issue we discussed at Justin's site; the dang clasp will NOT stay closed.

Wow, really? I mean, it sticks out a tiny bit but I didn't have the same problem I've had with, say, 25th Vipers or...well a lot of 25th stuff. I haven't had it pop off on either of my Steel Brigade figures. Then again, I haven't had it come off my Shock Troopers either, so I guess I'm sorry for your misfortune. In terms of body armor, I thought it worked way better than many of them so far.

Heh-heh. Great title on that'n.

Thank you! You're a gentleman and a scholar.

Great review, man. I can't wait to get this guy. Are you gonna nab the Snake Eyes variant?

Nah, I like the current arms too much. That, and I really don't like Snake Eyes' right hand. I had the same problem on Snake Eyes and Stalker for that express purpose. Not a huge problem, but one that is nonexistent in the Shock Trooper hands. However, I do think it's cool that they're doing it! Kinda harkens back to the fact that the Steel Brigade figures used to use various parts colored the same way.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

And now you've cleared up the Snake Eyes mystery for me... but you'll probably reply to my follow-up questions before you read this. It's my hope that I'll make such a mess of this thread that you'll just give up, delete it and repost the review.

And yes, you missed out; it was a heady thrill indeed to get a G.I. Joe of oneself in the '80s. The figure was kinda crappy, but I didn't care!

Yeah, honestly, it's harder and harder to army build, and I understand that. When they brought Joes back, it was in a time that old collectors had money and NOW they could really army build! Then they brought out the TRU Cobra Trooper 6 pack (O-Ring one) and all kinds of stuff, and people army built like crazy! Then they kept doing stuff like that and expected people to do the same. Well...we've sorta hit a peak. People are stuck with their armies they created previously, and that cost a LOT! The only people they can get now are folks like me that didn't army build previously. Still, it's almost too late 'cause I DID get quite a few Cobra Troopers from the 25th line, and that's the only reason I'm not getting more troopers and Vipers in this current line. I mean seriously; if it wasn't for those extra guys, I TOTALLY WOULD. Especially with the Vipers - but i'll get to them later.

The Steel Brigade guys are exempt from this! They're totally new and unique and AWESOME, and the first GOOD trooper for the good guys. They may make something else later (or new Steel Brigades) but I honestly can't imagine being disappointed with these guys further down the line.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

Yeah, gotta agree there. I mean, when they make a Beachhead head you know it's gona be used a lot! Plain masked heads are perfect. But hey, think of it this way: if you were using Beachhead as an army builder - the Steel Brigade guys just MATCH him! They're in the same army, right? Using the same stuff!

Wait. One of yours IS the Snake Eyes variant, isn't it? How'd I miss that? EDIT: So both of yours are the Snake Eyes version? Or does the Snake Eyes version include SE's arms, in addition to his torso?

Snake Eyes version has Snake Eyes arms and legs. Problem there is that they don't give 'em a pistol, sooo...the holster remains empty (though it's not like I don't have a MILLION GUNS I could put in there). Still, I think the current figure is the best choice of parts.

It looks like Shadow Tracker is speaking at them from off-panel!

HA! I always thought of it as inexplicable bloody word bubble, but now I'm thinking of him as spitting blood as he speaks. AWESOME.

And yes, you missed out; it was a heady thrill indeed to get a G.I. Joe of oneself in the '80s. The figure was kinda crappy, but I didn't care!

I don't agree! I've always liked the look of the Steel Brigade guy, ever since I found out about 'em! I KNOW it would have been my most used figure if I had one when I was a kid. No question.

I just hate the gap:

It never closes all the way, even when it's not on a figure.

I can meet you half way there, I suppose. What I hate is when the flap actually sticks out - what is sticking out there is a pocket, though I will agree that the gap is a bit ugly. The other thing I hate is when it keeps poping OPEN, completely. Like the Pit Trooper from RoC. His big apron vest is awesome...but you can't close it! The flap is stuck out so far that it gets in the way of play, and every time you move his arm down it pops it open! With the Steel Brigade guy you get nothing other than some mild visual interuption - no play interuption. Play interuption is what I'm worried about with the Techno-Viper, but we'll see.

Great review and a great figure.
I've got about 3 of these guys now, and I just luv 'em. Might end up with more of them too, if Christmas plays out like I'm thinking it will.
I like the character(s) as extra vehicle crewmen, but the differences from the Pit Commando, and the VAMP II Delta driver got me thinking about where these guys fit in as far as tasks go.
Pit Commandos would be the base guards, and Delta would be land vehicle drivers.....so these "basic" Steel Brigade guys would be......foot soldiers? Yeah, I'd be cool with that.

Yeah, I'm pretty much thinking the same thing! Though the Pit commandos are now...lacking, when compared to this awesomeness, I think they make great security! Kinda like how I'm going to use the Renegades Cobra Troopers; they're gona be on security duty under Night Adder. And I'd TOTALLY use the Steel Brigade driver if I had any. I just can't buy a whole other VAMP for one figure...

Hilarious review!
The most violent Alexx Short yet, and I think I've read them all.
I understand your not wanting to buy another Vamp just for the figure, but I really think you should reconsider. The S.B. Delta is AWESOME !
If that is'nt enough, the Vamp itself looks great along side the PoC one.
Oh wait, these reviews are meant for the reader to be talked into buying a toy. :) Sorry.
