Long story short, for a php message board host, Yahoo pretty much stinks. Their SQL backend is clunky, their database utilities barely function, and their response time to our SMTP problems has been non-existent.

For this reason we've decided to finally get this message board migration under way, but we want some input from the members.

Here are the things to consider:

- The boards will likely have to be down for a few days while the migration occurs and DNS records are repointed to the new webhost.

- We should be able to move over the complete memberlist, so that should not be an issue.

- We hope to be able to migrate posts, but that may not be able to happen. It appears that the message board data has become somewhat corrupt, either from Yahoo's crappy SQL functions, or just from age, since this board has basically been around and intact for several years. If the post tables are corrupt, it would really be best if we start from scratch. If we do that, we would keep the old boards open for a period of time so folks could comb through threads and manually copy and paste what they want on the new boards.

- We're upgrading to phpbb3, which offers a lot more customization and potential options down the road.

In the long run this is going to be a very beneficial move. It should take care of a lot of those stupid errors in email notification, the database should react quicker and everything should be more stable. We figure if we lose some posts that's something we can recover from.

It's been a long and arduous learning process, but I think it'll be great in the end.

So our question to you: What would be everyone's preference for a time frame for the boards to be down? We would LOVE to be able to get the new boards up in time for the Con in Atlanta just in case we can't migrate posts, we can at least have all Con info current on the new boards.

Do people visit a lot on the weekends? Is there a particular period of time throughout the week?

Give us some input, we want this to be as non-invasive as possible.

Thanks!

Justin

I'm on here way too often so I can't say there's really a "good" time for me. But do what you need to do, and if a fellow techy can help you out please let me know, I'd be more than happy to assist in any way possible.

I'm in agreement with gawd........doing it on a weekend would not be as prudent as one might think. Most of the 'action' happens when folks are home for the weekends.

Monday-Wednesday, definately more do-able.........Thumbs up

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help..... Cool

Guys,

Don't worry-- we'll have trauma counsellors on hand to help you cope with your "JBL withdrawls"! Cool

Justin and I are hoping to make this as smooth of a transition as possible! During this period the site itself might vanish in your browser as we fully migrate our DNS entries over to GoDaddy as well. We're moving the whole site-- lock, stock, and barrel (roll) so this is a fairly big bit of work. However, once its done the JBL family of sites is going to have a MUCH bigger hosting plan to play with. We're looking to really spruce up the "hallowed halls" a bit and add in all sorts of new features to the forums as well as a new site design for JBL itself. Most of the upgrades won't happen until post-Convention but we really wanted to get the site migration done BEFORE we all head down to Atlanta to bask in a weekend of GIJoe-overload!

As always, your patience is appreciated! However, we do want to make the experience here at the site(s) and forums the absolute best it can be for the community!

Fred

Awww Man! I guess Monday thur Wednesday is gonna have to do. I know I don't post a lot here Justin but I love reading JBL DAILY BATTLE BRIEFINGS. I hate it when something goes wrong and it's down for a couple of days so if this helps then I'll deal with it.

Mon-Wed is fine I'll just have a reason to go to bed sooner than usual after getting off work. Just don't be gone long like the DD forums or I may not be able to cope. Heading over to Hiss tank to register until you get back up.

That's a drastic step, don't you think? Wink

I think that the earlier this gets done, the better off the site will be on the whole, considering we're right up against the Convention. Beach Head

No need to panic!

I don't really care too much about losing old posts, so long as I can keep my same post count.
