BIG-SCREEN WATCHMEN's FIRST CASTINGS
According to both of today’s Hollywood trades, the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Watchman has the first additions to its cast, and they are Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Malin Akerman. Zack Snyder 300 directs.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Set in an alternate America, 'Watchmen' follows costumed hero Rorschach, who is living a vigilante lifestyle because most masked heroes have retired or been outlawed. While investigating a murder, Rorschach learns that a former masked-hero colleague has been killed, prompting him to begin investigating a possible conspiracy."

Haley - best known for this roles as a teen in Breaking Away and The Bad News Bears before mounting a comeback with his Oscar-nominated role in Little Children will play Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach, "who ignores the ban on costumed vigilantes."

Crudup (Almost Famous, long-time voice of the Mastercard “Priceless” commercials) will play Dr. Manhattan, "a superpowered being with godlike powers and temperament."

Akerman will play Laurie Juspeczyk/the Silk Spectre, "who is involved with Dr. Manhattan -- but that relationship begins to fall apart as he becomes more disconnected from humanity."

Goode will play Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, "a costumed adventurer who retired voluntarily, disclosed his identity and built a large fortune. He hatches a plot to avert a global catastrophe he believes will be caused by Dr. Manhattan."

Wilson will play the Nite-Owl, "a crime-fighter who uses technical wizardry and has an owl-shaped flying vehicle."

Morgan will play the Comedian, "a cigar-chomping, gun-toting vigilante-turned-paramilitary agent."

Shooting is set to start this fall in Vancouver, with Snyder reportedly employing many of the filming techniques he used for his adaptation of 300.

Not an A-list celebrity in the bunch. I mean I've never heard of any of these people. Then again I'd never heard of Gerald Butler before 300 either, and he was great. So we'll see.

I'm a little late in replying but honestly, GOOD! I'm sick of seeing the same stinking face on every character. I hate seeing a known person every time I watch a movie. I know famous faces are a big draw for some people but I personally avoid movies where a famous person plays the lead. There are so many actors it just sickens me to see the same people over and over.

It's like going to the local theater in a small town. Sure the same 20 people aren't in every play but count on them being in 2 out of the 5 you go see.

The only two names I know on that list are Billy Crudup and Patrick Wilson.

Crudup because of "Almost Famous" and Wilson because of "Phantom of the Opera" (He played Raoul). Wilson looks a little bit young/fit to play the Nite-Owl (who's a middle-aged slightly overweight fellow in the book) but maybe they'll have him pack on some pounds. Crudup is kind of a non-issue since he'll be hidden behind makeup/CGI anyway.

Though having looked up Akerman on IMDB...she's actually a dead-ringer for the character she's playing...at least facially, they might have to dye her brunette to match.

Haley looks sufficiently intense to play Rorshach, Goode definitely has the "smarmy" look for Ozymandias, and Morgan almost looks a bit young for the Comedian, but I figure some makeup FX will fix that.

So looks-wise this cast seems great so far...the question of course being: Can they act? Wink

So that's the big change they're making to update the time setting of the story, eh?

I guess so...but didn't Dr. Manhattan toy with the idea of destroying the world in the comic, too? It's been an age since I've read it all the way through.

Not that I recall. His biggest thing was apathy about stopping it from going all to hell as I remember the story.

No, I don't think Dr. Manhattan wanted to destroy the world either. He was just so far removed from humanity that he didn't care one way or the other. Which I believe was part of Veidt's plan as well.

Looks like we all have a bit of rereading to do it seems.

LOVE IT!!!

I love when they cast 'unknown/little known' actors........makes the actual storyline more intriguing, IMO..........you don't spend the movie thinking, "oh I remember him in this movie and it was crap"

I'm looking forward to this one!! Wink Cool
