GIJoeCon 2018: Python Patrol Major Bludd is revealed at last!

The GIJoeCon 2018 previews are nearly complete with a look at the Python Patrol Major Bludd

GIJoeCon 2018 Python Patrol Major Bludd front

PYTHON PATROL INFANTRY COMMANDER:
MAJOR BLUDD

– 25th Anniversary Style/Fully Poseable Action Figure.
– Modern Era Update of Character based on 2003 design.
– Features NEW Head Sculpt with removable helmet.
– Includes removable grenade harness with pistol,
handgun with rocket, backpack with rockets x 3,
sonic bazooka, and Cobra Logo Stand.

Hmm… I find myself conflicted on this one.

On one hand, the overall deco looks fantastic!  It’s an excellent recreation of the 2003 six-pack Major Bludd! (Those colors are just ridiculously engaging.) I like the Cobra Shock Trooper legs and the Retaliation Cobra Trooper harness and torso look great together!  Heck, I even like the backpack choice.  I’d say that 85% of this figure is pure win.

On the other hand (or arm) that leaves  that stupid 25th Anniversary Major Bludd arm.

Ever since Bludd was first released back in 1983, I’ve never liked his immobile right arm. The G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero line was chock-full of incredibly articulated figures but Major Bludd was given an arm with only a single point of articulation located at the shoulder.  Thankfully, Hasbro corrected this design oversight and no other version of Bludd was so limited up until the 25th Anniversary Collection– including the 2003 Python Patrol version.  As such, I figured that the Club would follow the original design and fans would finally have a modern-style construction of the Cobra poet with two functioning arms.

Sadly, I was wrong.  The Club went to all the trouble to tool a brand-new head but decided to leave one of the worst design decisions in the entire G.I. Joe line intact.  Hopefully there’s still time to correct this oversight but I’m not holding my breath.

It’s just my opinion but Bludd went from potentially one of the best in this set to a tragic reminder of what might have been.

Only one preview remains – Sgt. Smasher!  Meanwhile, here’s the roster of this year’s set:

  1. So disappointed with the use of the 25th right arm with no elbow articulation! The club could have kept the original 25th head and spend the available budget tooling a decent 50th style right arm. It’s been 10 years since the original 25th launched and Bludd deserved a proper update.
