YES!!!!  FSS 7 Budo has finally been revealed!

Okay, it’s time for an unpopular opinion: I’m not a fan of the 2013 Retaliation Budo figure. It’s not a bad figure by any stretch of the imagination but it’s design is that of a historically accurate samurai– which isn’t what 1988’s Budo was all about. The original figure was less “The Last SamuraiKen Watanabe and more of a melding of traditional samurai with the modern world.  As such, that figure never worked for me.

This one does– in spades!  The design evokes the 1988 figure in all of the best ways possible.  In fact, it even uses some of the parts of the 2013 version but minus all of the rubber overlays that rendered that figure pretty much a statue.  (Form over function, it would seem.)  Plus, I did the reuse of the helmet from the 2013 SDCC exclusive Bludgeon figure!

Budo never really got a lot of love in the ARAH era.  He was in a SINGLE issue of the Marvel Comics series and never once (to my memory) appeared in the animation.  It wasn’t until the Devil’s Due Publishing era that the character got some love. It was then that this Joe fan gained a whole new appreciation for the character and decided that Budo was worth seeing a modern update.  Thanks to FSS 7, he’s getting the treatment that this Joe fan had hoped for!  (Plus, I can set him up next to Repeater and reenact their comic debut in Marvel #82!)

Sure, I’m fan-boying a bit but I’m really looking forward this figure now!

For those who are keeping score, here’s the roster of FSS 7:

  1. Wow, Budo looks good! He was in a single issue of the Marvel run? Ah, yes. But what an issue #82 was! “Weeding Out” is the classic story where we got to see Duke finally make good on his promise from issue #22 to “make the sorry lot of you (the Joes) into soldiers!” Now, we just need Lightfoot and an updated Grand Slam from his return as field leader in that issue to complete the main cast!
