Battle Force 2000 vs. Cobra BATs:

We’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of the G.I. JOE Battle Force 2000 team with this untold tale of the original team members from a recently declassified special mission.

The G.I. JOE BF 2000 team is the walking, breathing proving grounds for tomorrow’s battlefield technology today! These highly trained specialists are entrusted with one-of-a-kind, state-of-theart prototype weapons. Their mission is to field-test experimental equipment under battlefield conditions.

COBRA has developed a new laser weapon system so dangerous that it threatens the safety of the entire planet! The G.I. JOE BF 2000 team is called into action and must travel through the Pacific Northwest into British Columbia to dismantle the operation. What they don’t know is that COBRA is ready for them with a battalion of their upgraded B.A.T. (Battle Android Troopers) guarding their base. This G.I. JOE team will be fighting against insurmountable odds, and must pull their individual specialties together to battle these deadly threats. Will the cold and calculated programming of the COBRA B.A.T. SQUAD LEADER be the end of this G.I. JOE team?

Our 2017 exclusive 3 3/4-inch convention set contains a highly requested G.I. JOE team and some new additions to your COBRA army that are available for the first time in the modern era 25A action figure style. This special edition 15 action-figure set includes:

Six G.I. JOE team members: Ian “Avalanche” Costello, Brian “Blaster” Davis, David “Blocker” McCarthy, Thomas “Maverick” Kiley, Knockdown, and Dodger.

Nine enemy combatants: COBRA B.A.T. SQUAD LEADER, and COBRA B.A.T. V1.8 (troop builder x 8). Each of these great teams comes with their classic weapons, accessories, figure stands and file cards!

We now have the roster for this year’s set: 6 members of Battle Force 2000 vs. 1 Cobra BAT Squad leader and 8 Cobra BATs.  This means that the Club will be utilizing a total of 8 unique figure designs this year to produce the boxed set.

Hmm… that’s quite a reduction in the number of unique characters in this year’s set.  Let’s breakd it down:

  • 2016 Sky Patrol: 6 unique Joe, 3 Cobra leaders, 2 x 3 troops (11 unique figure designs)
  • 2015 Tiger Force: 6 unique Joes, 3 Cobra leaders, 2 x 3 troops (11 unique figure designs)
  • 2014 Zombie Initiative: 6 unique Joes, 1 Cobra Leader, 2 x 3 troops, 2 Cobra scientists (10 unique figure designs)
  • 2013 Nocturnal Fire: 6 unique Joes, 3 Cobra Leaders, 2 x 3 troops (11 unique designs)

One would think that this might lead to the set pricing remaining the same this year…

Pricing

This year’s set will set Club members back $410.00.  ($495.00 for non-members)  Additional bagged sets may be purchased for $295.00.

Those of you who prefer the Golden Ticket experience can expect to pay $320.00 for the opportunity to purchase 3x the limit on all souvenirs at the Club store.

Let’s compare prices for the past few years:

  • 2017: $410 con set / $295 bagged set
  • 2016: $385 con set / $275 bagged set
  • 2015: $375 con set / $255 bagged set
  • 2014: $370 con set/ $250 bagged set
  • 2013: $360 con set / $230 bagged set

While no one will deny that prices on EVERYTHING have gone up the past few years, this year’s con set is quite a jump for fewer unique sculpts.  An increase of $25.00 for a full 3 fewer unique sculpts is a bit harder for some folks to take, especially with this year’s convention being at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando which, as nice as it is, will never be considered a value-priced option for a convention.

In the Club’s defense, this year’s convention wasn’t even on the books until Hasbro granted the Club at two-year extension to their contract at Joe Con 2016.  Still, the price increases and the more limited offerings in this year’s set just might end up hurting the club more than they realize.

Let’s not even think about the increases in the cost to the convention souvenirs, which have maintained a higher price point ever since 2015’s “unfortunate circumstances” mark-up.

  1. Ugh! They couldn’t have chosen a worse time to keep jacking up their prices. I’m not even a B.A.T. fan and they make up the majority of the set! I’ll have to try and grab the six BF 2000 team members on their own somehow. And then there’s also the convention “souvenir” figures to consider… This just sucks on all levels for me.
