Rest in Peace Leonard Nimoy 1931 – 2015

Leonard Nimoy

Rest in peace, Leonard Nimoy.

It was announced today that one of the icons of modern entertainment, Leonard Simon Nimoy passed away due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  He was 83 years old.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 50 years or are a techno-phobe, you’ve seen his work in some form.  From his most popular role of Spock in the classic Star Trek series to his tenure as “The Great Paris” replacing Martin Landau on Mission: Impossible to his more recent appearance as Dr. William Bell on the Fox series Fringe, Nimoy’s performances captivated generations.

In addition to acting, he was a director, a photography, a teacher, and an author.

I grew up watching Leonard Nimoy, first as Spock in reruns on TV and then on the big screen.  I discovered The Great Paris years later while recovering from back surgery when Mission: Impossible was in heavy syndication on the then-fledgling F/X cable network.  I was captivated by his appearances on Fringe.  Nimoy was more than just “that guy on TV” for me.  He was a familiar presence, a comforting voice and, in real life, an inspiration of what a well-rounded individual could accomplish through perseverance and hard work.

For years, whenever there was a personal tragedy or a death in the family, I found myself watching Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.  The words of both the characters of Kirk and Spock served as an inspiration and a reminder that “how we face death is as important as how we face life.”  Tonight, I’ll be doing the same but this time it will be to remember the life and contributions of one of its cast.

His final tweet, sent on February 23, 2015, is uncannily fitting.

Good bye, Mr. Nimoy.  I have been and always shall be your fan.  May your memory and the inspiration that you’ve brought to millions truly live long and prosper.

G.I. Joe FSS 3 Spearhead & Max Vypra

It’s Friday!  Time to celebrate with another G.I. Joe FSS 3 review!

There’s nothing quite like the arrival of new G.I. Joe figures to turn an ordinary Monday into something a bit more exciting!  In this latest G.I. Joe FSS 3 shipment, subscribers were treated to new versions of the G.I. Joe Pointman and the newly minted Cobra Courier.

Always eager to examine new figures, Chris “Werecat” Chung of JoeSightings.com and I tossed the figures under the review lens. Were these two figures worth the wait?  Did the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club hit another set of home runs or did these two fall somewhat short?  Is Max really related to Chester Cheetah?

Find out the answers to these exciting questions and more over at the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club Review Index!

Joe Con 2015: Registration Updates

Joe Con 2015

The dates for Joe Con 2015 are looming ever closer and potential attendees are wondering “How soon can we register for the event?”  Today, the folks at the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club sent out this update regarding the registration time table and the effect of the West Coast dock workers slowdown on the convention sets:

Hello everyone!

I hope you have been enjoying the images of the convention sets at GIJoeCon.com!  We are very excited to be able to bring these figures to you.

Here’s the current registration update:  We are still getting the final bugs worked out of the new version of the registration software.  We are down to 9 critical issues and the programmer is working to correct them.  As you know in development, sometimes when you fix one thing, it causes an error somewhere else.  So, no registration this week.  Unknown about next week at this time.

We are planning to put attending and non-attending up at the same time so both will fall in line with the first day (24 hr) exclusive pin (3 3/4″ set) / jacket (12″ set).  We will also be extending the discount date for Exhibitors ordering multiple booths, so no worries.

Several of you have expressed concerns about the west coast dock workers slow down.  Yes it is true that the ports are backed up for weeks maybe months.  Because of this, we are bringing in all of the convention items via air freight and it will be really tight for the final shipment as it’s coming in multiple waves.

If you have not made a hotel reservation, please do so quickly as there are just a few rooms left for each night.  Use the link at GIJoeCon.com!

See you in Springfield!

Brian

Sigh…

I hate to say it but we’ve been here before.  More than once.  (Yes, those are multiple links.)  It seems that every year there’s some sort of issue with the registration system that causes continual delays and a series of “registration is coming soon” messages that are inevitably followed by “registration is REALLY coming soon.”

Joe Con 2015: Tiger Force Recondo Revealed!

Joe Con 2015 banner

The reveals for the Joe Con 2015 Tiger Force vs. Iron Grenadiers set continue as the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club reveals Tiger Force Recondo!

Joe Con 2015 Tiger Force Recondo

– 25th Anniversary Modern Style/Fully Poseable Action Figure
– 1st Tiger Force Release based on 1988 prototype**
– Removable Hat and Shoulder Harness with Pistol
– Includes Marksman Rifle, Mambele (Sickle Sword),
G.I. Joe Logo Stand, and Backpack

Tiger Force Recondo made his retail debut on Toys R Us store shelves in 1988. However, that’s not the version the Club chose to release, instead going with an obscure deco that appeared only in a 1988 catalog.  To bring this design forward for Joe Con 2015, the folks at the G.I. Joe Collector’s Club appear to have used the body of the 25th Anniversary Recondo with the arms of the Retaliation Kwinn figure.  It’s an interesting idea as hinged wrists have become a truly necessary part of the current style of construction and their absence in some recent figures has been very noticeable.
